TROOP 200 Basic Skills Campout

Bayport Scout Reservation, Jamaica, VA

TRIP OVERVIEW: Troop 200 will camp at Bayport Scout Reservation, the Chesapeake Bay District’s very own 300 acre reservation dedicated solely for scouting. Our two day outdoor program will feature instruction in the basic Scouting skills necessary for younger Scouts to advance to Scout and Tenderfoot ranks. The program will offer older Scouts the opportunity to instruct using the EDGE method, to individually work on rank advancement, and to HAVE FUN!

PLAN: Trailer packing (SPL, PL’s & QM’s) and New Scout /Parent Orientation will be Thu, 30 Apr/1830. New scouts will have their gear and packs checked for a rank requirement. Trailer packing is in Activity Uniform.

- SHOW time is Friday, 1 May /1630 in Field Uniform with Activity T-Shirt underneath. Drive time is about 1 hour and 15 minutes depending on traffic, Vehicle assignments will be determined at the Campout PLC as required.

- RETURN time is 3 May /1400. After a “Scout Is Reverent” service in Field Uniform, Start/Stop/Continue, and lunch on Sunday, the troop will return to St. Luke’s. A call will be made to the parents picking up their scout if the time changes more than 15 minutes.

ACTIVITIES: The focus of the program is learning basic Scouting skills. The instructional schedule will be finalized at the Campout PLC with SPL, QM, Patrol Leaders, and Troop Guides (Tuesday, 26 Apr/1830 at St Lukes)

- First Class Scouts and below will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to pass requirements toward earning their next rank. These Scouts should study their requirements and plan their Patrol meals to allow them to pass their cooking requirements. The skills will be taught by senior Scouts and signed off by ASMs. It is the responsibility of scouts working on second and first class requirements to bring any needed materials for anticipated requirements with them.

UNIFORM: Field Uniform will be worn on Friday and Sunday. Patrol Leaders will conduct a uniform inspection prior to leaving (Field Uniform, neckerchief or BSA bolo, and subdued pants). When in doubt – follow the Troop Guidelines found on the Library tab of the website!

FOOD: Scouts will bring Friday night dinner with them. A cooler will be available to refrigerate dinner items if needed. All scouts will need to bring food to prepare a backpacking meal for Sat lunch using troop backpacking stoves for a rank requirement. Patrols will be responsible for preparing four cooked meals: Sat breakfast, Sat dinner; Sun breakfast & Sun lunch. The Adult Grubmaster will sign the patrol’s meal plan and assist patrols as required.

COST: The event fee is $45.00 per Scout to cover transportation, site costs, and patrol grub for the weekend. Signing up on Final Friday is a commitment to pay. The grubmaster for each patrol will work out the cost per Scout for their patrol food – refunds are possible and may vary by patrol.

DIRECTIONS: Continue to follow US-17N passing through York County, over the Coleman Bridge ($2.00 toll) and through Gloucester County. You will see the Virginia Motor Speedway on the left. 0.8 miles past the speedway you will see Canoe House Rd. (Rt. 605) and a Bayport Scout Reservation billboard. Make a right on Canoe House Rd. Follow Canoe House Rd 3.5 miles, making a left at every fork in the road. Canoe House Rd. will change to Bayport Rd. (Rt 604). You will go down a winding hill and over a small bridge. After the bridge make a left into the camp property. This is approximately 50 miles total one-way. Drive time is approximately 1hr, 15 mins.

GEAR: This will be a spring campout with unpredictable weather. Scouts should watch the weather forecast and pack for the weather and nuisance insects accordingly. Every Scout should be sure to bring his Boy Scout Handbook, full rain gear, carryable WATER BOTTLE, and walking/hiking boots. There will be frequent walking from the campsite to the Galley pavilion on this campout.

REGISTRATION: Patrol leaders will CALL their scouts for initial sign-up numbers. FINAL FRIDAY is on 17 April after signups are confirmed at the 13 April Troop meeting.

PERMISSION SLIPS/MEDICAL INFORMATION: Current BSA Medical Forms are required. Part A, B, and C must be dated on or after 1 May, 2014. Any special medical information will be collected Friday before departure. Contact Mrs. Wilbert if you have any questions.
