Collect

Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself: help us to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be drawn to you; through him who was lifted up on the cross, and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

old testament reading

Song of Solomon 2:8-13

A reading from the book of the Song of Solomon.

8 The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains,

bounding over the hills.

9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice.
10 My beloved speaks and says to me: "Arise, my love, my fair one, and

come away;

11 for now the winter is past, the rain

is over and gone.

12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.
13 The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9
R Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.

My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe. R

You are the most handsome of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. R

Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. Your royal sceptre is a sceptre of equity; you love righteousness and hate wickedness. R

Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. R

From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; daughters of kings are among your ladies of honour; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. R

new testament Reading

James 1.17–27

A reading from the letter of James.

17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

18 In fulfilment of his own purpose

he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

19 You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger;

20 for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness.

21 Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word

that has the power to save your souls.

22 But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.

23 For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror;

24 for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like.

25 But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty,

and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act – they will be blessed in their doing.

26 If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.

27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Gradual Hymn:

O voice of the Belovèd!
Thy bride hath heard Thee say,
“Rise up, My love, My fair one,
Arise and come away.
For lo, ’tis past, the winter,
The winter of thy year;
The rain is past and over,
The flowers on earth appear.

“And now the time of singing
Is come for every bird;
And over all the country
The turtle dove is heard;
The fig her green fruit ripens,
The vines are in their bloom;
Arise and smell their fragrance;
My love, My fair one, come!”

Yea, Lord! Thy Passion over,
We know this life of ours
Hath passed from death and winter
To leaves and budding flowers;
No more Thy rain of weeping
In drear Gethsemane;
No more the clouds and darkness,
That veiled Thy bitter Tree.

Our Easter Sun is risen!
And yet we slumber long,
And need Thy Dove’s sweet pleading
To waken prayer and song.
Oh breathe upon our deadness,
Oh shine upon our gloom;
Lord, let us feel Thy presence
And rise and live and bloom.

Gospel Reading

Mark 7.1–8, 14–15, 21–23

Alleluia, alleluia.
I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Alleluia.

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

Glory to you O Lord

1 When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus,

2 they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them.

3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders;

4 and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.)

5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?’

6 Jesus said to them, ‘Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, “This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;

7 in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.”

8 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.’

14 Then he called the crowd again and said to them, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand:

15 there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.

21 For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder,

22 adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly.

23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ

Offertory Hymn: 104

Communion Hymn: 271

Post communion Prayer

God our creator, you feed your children with the true manna, the living bread from heaven: let this holy food sustain us through our earthly pilgrimage until we come to that place where hunger and thirst are no more; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Eucharistic Prayer Cards We have had a lot of feedback indicating that it can be confusing to have so many different bits of paper on which to follow the service. So we are going to experiment with not giving out cards for the Eucharistic Prayer. It will be possible to follow the service just using the order of service booklet which includes all the words for the congregation. If you wish to see all the words that the priest says in the Eucharistic prayer do ask a welcomer for the suitable card.

Publicity Are you frustrated about confusing signs and notices? Do you value what happens here and wish what we do could be better advertised? Do you ever hear of something later than everyone else and wonder how they all found out about it? You are not alone! We need a volunteer (or a small group) to help coordinate and run our publicity. Speak to Natasha or a churchwarden if you might be able to help (or if you wish to nominate someone else to help…)

FOOD BANK A group of churches in Kingsbury hopes to open a satellite to the Brent food bank atLindsay Park Baptist Church in September. Plans are for one afternoon a week (day to be confirmed, but Monday to Thursday) for about three hours. Six helpers will be needed each time, to meet and greet, fill bags with food and make tea. It is hoped we can find at least 12 helpers, thus making it a fortnightly commitment. If you would like to be involved in this work of Christ's mission, please see Angela Hopkins.

Course in Christian Studies The Willesden area of our diocese is offering this two year journey exploring the Christian Faith, in five week modules on Tuesday evenings. You can try it out one module at a time. It starts in September and the venue will be organised according to the location of the participants. Contact Natasha or Carl for more information.
