Title Plaques: For 2007 all who have earned titles and sent their form into Chuck will receive plaques. Guidelines will be put together and distributed shortly for 2008 plaques.

New Business:

Policy Manual: Krys suggested creating a policy manual to cover such things as requirements for plaques, annual voting for judges, etc. Policies could be created by the Board and/or the membership and changed without having to re-write the by-laws and constitution. All in attendance agreed with this suggestion.

CGC Test: Tentatively we can host a CGC test at Puckerbrush dog training at the end of the summer. Cathy will work with the owner of Puckerbrush and a CGC tester to set a firm date and times.

June Meeting: Krys offered to host a June meeting as a puppy social or with a presentation. She will check her calendar to see about having the meeting on a Saturday.

2009 Specialty Judges: Chuck read the list of judges he received from club members. That list was narrowed down to those shown below:

Cathy will send this out and ask that responses be sent to Krys by May 1, 2008.

EVENTS OTHER PLACES/CORRESPONDENCE

BLUE RIDGE SHETLAND SHEEPDOG CLUB presents a two-day seminar July 26 & 27, 2008, BASIC GENETICS FOR BREEDERS by Kim Schive

Kim Schive of Foxglove Shelties is a prominent breeder, owner-handler and AKC-approved judge. She has bred and owned Register of Merit winners in both sexes. She has taught statistics, experimental design and other subjects at Harvard, Boston, and GallaudetUniversities and she currently writes about mathematics and medicine for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kim has also written about genetics for Shetland Sheepdog magazines.

Do you have questions about genetics and breeding?

  • Should I inbreed, linebreed or outcross? What are the potential benefits and risks?
  • What breeding strategies can I use to improve structure, temperament or control size?
  • Why does that mediocre stud dog consistently sire puppies better than himself while my specialty-winning bitch has yet to produce a puppy even close to her quality?
  • A genetic problem showed up in a dog of my breeding. What do I do now?

This seminar will answer these questions and more. It will provide you with the basic and advanced genetic concepts every breeder needs and will help you build the solid framework of genetic knowledge you need to get the breeding results you want. Breeding good dogs is more than a matter of luck. There are rules, and even your dogs follow them!
