A breath of fresh air for production facilities

Separation specialist Keller Lufttechnik is at EMO Hannover 2017 to unveil its new HydronPlus hybrid wet/dry separator, which has already won the Baden-Württemberg Environmental Technology Award ahead of the trade fair.

Wet separators are specialist filtering systems used wherever sparks fly in machining processes and wherever combustible, explosive or sticky dust is created. They purify the atmosphere by feeding the contaminated air through a fine screen of water and then separating out the droplets containing impurities in a centrifugal force filter. The use of water also reliably prevents any explosions of ignitable dust. Yet this technology, which has proved its worth for decades, has now reached its limits. “These universal systems do not always meet current requirements with regard to energy efficiency,
separation efficiency and ergonomics,” says Ulrich Stolz, head of the Technical Department at Keller Lufttechnik, based in KirchheimunterTeck, Germany. “Conventional wet separators cannot meet the level of separation efficiency required for clean air recirculation and at the same time deliver ecologically sound results. The residual impurities are too high in some instances, which is why these systems cannot be operated with direct recirculating air operation.”

Keller Lufttechnik is thus at EMO Hannover 2017 to unveil the new HydronPlus, whose hybrid technology brings together the advantages of wet and dry separation. “The HydronPlus combines the explosion protection benefits of a wet separator with the excellent separation efficiency of a dry separator,” explains Leopold Rang, head of Systems Engineering. “A wet separator is followed by a secondary filter stage, ensuring that the purified air falls far below the set limit values for particles as defined in workplace regulations and VDI standard 2262 Sheet 3 and can be recirculated back into the production plant.” Model calculations by Keller Lufttechnik indicate that approximately EUR 2,000 in annual savings on heating costs can be achieved using a HydronPlus in two-shift operation.

New-generation cross slides

The French Alps offer more than just breathtaking scenery and ski resorts – they’re also home to R-Tech, which produces impressive CNC cross slides for CAM-operated multi-spindle lathes. R-Tech is at EMO Hannover 2017 to present the latest development in this field.

The engineers from R-Tech developed the new CNC cross slides because – as they put it – they want to enhance a traditional machine with a technological tool that counteracts the machine’s lack of flexibility and precision. For a low investment cost, the CNC cross slides from R-Tech are designed to add more value, open up markets and set new standards in areas such as precision, surface quality and deburring.

R-Tech sees the CNC cross slides being showcased at EMO Hannover 2017 as an excellent opportunity to achieve competitive product prices, and points to the low investment and production costs. The company is harnessing the first-rate mechanical properties of its cross slides to deliver high processing performance, singling out their robustness in particular, with prismatic slideways acting as guides, for example. Two sets of motors and ball bearing spindles keep things moving, with the large diameter spindles supporting a torque of over one metric ton. The drive belt also facilitates transfer without play or compensatory adjustment. What’s more, this system doesn’t need maintenance or lubrication. Its design and the use of next-generation motors support an impressive torque of 3.48 Nm on the tool, despite the compact form. The system is powered by a FANUC CNC, which – in the words of R-Tech – offers first-class performance and ensures higher speed and precision than other solutions.

Milling made easy

Austrian metals specialist BOEHLERIT is at EMO Hannover 2017 to present a number of additions to its already wide-ranging portfolio, including the new ETAtec45P, a multifunctional tooling system for easy machining of level surfaces.

Surface milling is used to machine level surfaces and is the most popular milling method. The range of suitable tools is therefore wide, with milling cutters with a 45° approach angle being the most frequently used. However, Austrian metalworking specialist BOEHLERIT is now at EMO Hannover 2017 to show that even methods that are already popular and widespread still leave scope for optimization. The ETAtec 45P, which the company is showcasing in Hannover, is a multifunctional tooling system for extremely easy milling.

In the latest addition to its innovative milling tool portfolio, BOEHLERIT uses a seven-edged surface milling tool with the proven approach angle of 45° and positive basic geometry. This geometry in particular is designed to keep the cutting forces low, which is especially beneficial for users of low-performance machines with low stability. Despite the soft cutting force, a high machining volume is ensured. The new ETAtec 45P surface milling tool with its remarkably low cutting forces is also ideal for workpieces that may create unstable milling conditions due to their shape or properties. “All these benefits have a direct impact on process reliability,” says André Feiel, product manager for milling at BOEHLERIT.

Everything under control

Mitsubishi Electric and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT are at EMO Hannover 2017 to unveil an intelligent information system that provides machine operators with information tailored to their individual tasks directly from the machine control system.

To shorten decision-making processes and make it possible to perform even unfamiliar tasks faster and more flexibly in production operations, Fraunhofer IPT and Mitsubishi Electric joined forces to develop a new system designed to compile and process all the key information for machine operators on mobile devices. For example, the new solution supports employees by enabling them to use smart glasses and tablets directly on the shop floor, in everything from training and monitoring to resolving machine faults and maintenance. The system from Fraunhofer IPT and Mitsubishi is compatible with commercially available smart glasses and tablets that use an Android operating system, and can integrate them into industrial production environments.

In this new system, the smart devices and Mitsubishi Electric machine control system communicate with each other directly, thus allowing employees to identify faults – for instance, an incorrectly closed machine door – in real time. The new system also provides machine operators with information on imminent maintenance via pop-up messages on the mobile device and offers help. Various formats such as video and text are used to show step by step how a tool is changed, for example. This enables users to solve problems quickly themselves and cut machine downtimes. The new system also makes it possible to plan production orders more precisely and finish products faster.

Mitsubishi Electric and Fraunhofer IPT are jointly unveiling the system in Hall 25 at Stand B94 at EMO Hannover 2017. Visitors from all over the world will then have the opportunity to test it for themselves using various smart devices and talk to experts from Fraunhofer IPT and Mitsubishi.
