TRENDS IN DESIGN - Spring 2014

Awash in color and comforted by texture

Stroheim, founded in 1865 by Julius Stroheim and acquired by Fabricut in 2010, has consistently set itself apart by offering exclusive patterns of high-end fabrics. Partnering with designer Dana Gibson, they have created a collection of vibrant, cheerful prints in blends of cotton, linen, and rayon at a very affordable price. With just enough linen to add a luxurious feel, the rayon and cotton fibers allow the fabric to drape beautifully without the wrinkled look that can be problematic with a higher linen content. Offered with a full line of coordinates and accompanying wallpapers, this introduction is a wonderful way to transform a space for spring. Tangerine, corals, fuchsias and clear marine blues are still driving the design markets in 2014, despite Pantone's selection of radiant orchid as the color of the year. While the delay in creating new patterns in radiant orchid accounts for some of the persistence of these other colors, the reality is that consumers are enjoying the energy and vitality that they suggest.

In wovens, warm shades of gray, intermingled with a "mineral" blue and citrus, is persisting for another season. Because of the popularity of the color combination, the availability of beautiful coordinating fabrics is nothing short of mind-boggling. This particular combination is appealing for its ability to be both cool (gray) and warm (yellow) at the same time; it can be both sophisticated and cheerful.

Tribal and ethnic designs also remain popular, along with more and more realistic animal prints in many different fabrics. Finally, metallics are riding the "glam" wave and are being woven as metallic threads through the fabric itself or as the dye color (coppers, platinums). Velvets are resurgent and are available in more weights, colors, and cut patterns than ever before.
