Knot - The original instructions were as follows: Into the same stitch, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1. When you have completed the last k1, allow it to go to the right needle. Then cast off 4 of the 5 loops of that stitch one at a time.

Many found the above instructions very difficult to understand. If you have a problem with it, below is a more detailed breakdown. It is best not to knit this stitch loosely. Also, it is not supposed to be a popcorn (rounded or bobble) stitch. While it is a little bit bulky, it is more of an up and down / narrow stitch. The yarn over’s are done counterclockwise.

  1. Place your right needle into the first available stitch. Knit the stitch but do NOT take the stitch off of the left needle. (The right needle is now in front of the left needle and there is now 1 loop on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  2. In front of the left needle, yarn over from the back of the right needle to the front. Bring the right needle through the same stitch on the left needle from the front to the back, but do NOT take the stitches off of the left needle. (There are now 2 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  3. In back of the left needle, yarn over from the back to the front of the right needle and bring the right needle through the same stitch on the left needle from the back to the front, but do NOT take the stitches off of the left needle. (There are now 3 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  4. In front of the left needle, yarn over from the back to the front of the right needle. Bring the right needle through the same stitch on the left needle from the front to the back. Do NOT take the stitches off of the left needle. (There are now 4 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  5. In back of the left needle, yarn over from the back to the front of the right needle and bring the right needle through the same stitch on the left needle from the back to the front, but do NOT take the stitches off of the left needle. (There are now 5 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  6. NOW take the stitch off of the left needle.
  7. Pull the second loop from the edge of the right needle over the loop to its left. (There are now 4 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  8. Pull the second loop from the edge of the right needle over the loop to its left. (There are now 3 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  9. Pull the second loop from the edge of the right needle over the loop to its left. (There are now 2 loops on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”.)
  10. Pull the second loop from the edge of the right needle over the loop to its left. (There is now 1 loop on the right needle for the Knot “stitch”). The Knot stitch is now completed.

M1 = (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
P1b = Purl 1 stitch in back loop
P2tog = Purl 2 stitches together
P2sso = Pass 2 slipped stitches over

ssk = Slip, Slip, Knit = Slip the next 2 stitches as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 stitches and knit them together.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

Cable Stitches:

Left Purl Twist (LPT) Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front, p1, then k1 from cable needle.

(The stitch on hold is knit and the other is purled in the left direction)

Right Purl Twist (RPT) Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in back, k1, then p1 from cable needle.

(The stitch on hold is knit and the other is purled in the right direction)

Left Twist (LT) Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front, k1, then k1 from cable needle. (Knit both stitches)

Right Twist (RT) Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in back, k1, then k1 from cable needle. (Knit both stitches)

Left Cross (LC) Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front; k2, then k2 from cable needle.

Right Cross (RC) Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back; k2, then k2 from cable needle.

2/1 Purl Right Cross (2/1PRC) Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in back; k2, then p1 from cable needle.

2/1 Purl Left Cross (2/1PLC) Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front; p1, then k2 from cable needle.

2/2 Purl Right Cross (2/2PRC) Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back; k2, then p2 from cable needle.

2/2 Purl Left Cross (2/2PLC) Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front; p2, then k2 from cable needle.

If you wish to make this pattern even larger:

  1. Decide how much wider you want your afghan. (My gauge was approximately 17 stitches for 4 inches, which worked out to be 4-5 stitches per inch. You can use that to get a rough estimate or make your own swatch.)
  1. Side Borders: If you only want to increase the border stitches, make sure that, regardless of how many you add, the first stitch will always be a knit stitch and the last stitch in the row will come out to be a purl stitch. This is necessary in order to maintain the moss stitch (also referred to as a seed stitch) pattern.
  1. Top and Bottom Borders: If you increase the side borders, you should also increase the amount of rows for the top and bottom borders so they match the width of the side borders
  1. Stitches Before and After Pattern III: An identical amount of row increases can be made before and after Pattern III, which appears twice in the afghan. Make sure that you increase the same amount before and after knitting BOTH Pattern III’s in order to make the afghan symmetrical. Also, make sure you end on a “Right Side” row before beginning the first row of Pattern III.
  1. Sections: In the afghan there are three main parts (bottom, center and top) with Pattern III setting them apart. Within each of those three parts, three sections are knitted. After having decided how much wider you want the afghan, subtract the amount of stitches for any border stitch increases you’re going to make. What’s left is what should be equally divided between each of the 3 sections:

NOTE:Increases for the “section” parts of the afghan need to be done in multiples of 6 stitches in order to ensure that Pattern III comes out correctly. (The leaves in Pattern III are repeats of 6 stitches.) The increases will be not affect any of the actual patterns, so they will be knitted in stockinette stitch.

Section I:Increase at the beginning and end of the section.

Section II:Increase at the beginning and end of the section. You can do this in a small increase of 3 stitches on each side (which total one set of 6 stitches) OR an equal number of 6-stitch sets on each side. I would recommend that, for every set of 6 stitch increases, you add an equal number of 2-stitch set increases in the stockinette spaces between the three “flower branches” in that section. (Each set of three 2-stitch increases equals one set of 6 stitches.)

Section IV:Increase at the beginning and end of the section.

Section V:Increase at the beginning and end of the section.

Section III:If you increased the previous sections in sets of 6 stitches, those increases will allow you to make additional leaves. How many additional leaves you end up with depends on how many 6-stitch increases you made in the other sections.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cast on 187 sts.
