Transportation Services - Transportation Options Program

The Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) works to advance student efforts to create a culture of sustainability at OSU through programming that fosters environmental, social, and economic justice. SSI believes educational institutions have a responsibility to model innovative tools, systems, and ways of thinking as living laboratories for sustainability and provide students the experiences to become leaders in their communities creating sustainable change.

The Sustainability Fellowship Program pairs passionate students with campus departments and community organizations working to solve local and global sustainability challenges through research, education, and community engagement. Sustainability Fellowships contribute to projects that support sustainability goals while developing leadership competencies and transferable professional skills through mentorship, networking, and professional development. Participation in the program will enable you to develop the skills to be a sustainability leader including:

Transportation Services is recruiting a Sustainability Fellow to serve as the Bicycle Program Assistant. The Bicycle Program Assistant will provide support to the Transportation Options Program in the department of Transportation Services. Transportation Options works to provide sustainable transportation alternatives to the OSU community, focusing on a variety of modes including biking, walking, car share, transit, carpool, and skateboarding. The Bicycle Program Assistant will work directly with the Transportation Options staff to assist with bicycle programs at OSU including outreach, marketing, peer education, safety campaigns, bicycle maintenance, and program development. The Fellow will provide support to the Beaver Bike Rental program, the Dero Zap bike trip tracker program, the Pedal Corvallis bikeshare program, and many other bicycle-focused projects to encourage increased and sustained bike ridership, reduced drive-alone trips, and support environmental, economic and social sustainability on the OSU campus.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an aptitude to be effective in all responsibilities of the position.

Fellowship Responsibilities:

·  Maintain bicycle rental fleet for the OSU Beaver Bike Rental Program

·  Participate in planning and implementation of the OSU Bike Ambassadors program

·  Develop educational outreach materials for campus bike safety campaigns with the Transportation Options staff

·  Check on/maintain Dero Zap stations, assist Transportation Options staff in running competitions and incentive programs

·  Check on/maintain Dero Bike Fix-it stations

·  Plan and promote Dero Zap sign-up events

·  Assist in Project 529 Bicycle Registration

·  Assist in the development and promotion of the Pedal Corvallis Bike Share program on campus

·  Assist in programing and planning for bicycle-friendly events including Be Bright/Be Seen, Car Free Day, Beyond Earth Day, Bike Month, Get There/Drive Less challenges, and campus bike rides, bike breakfasts, and more.

Required Qualifications:

·  Must be a confident bicycle rider with some basic bike maintenance skills (e.g., fixing flat tires)

·  Must be a currently enrolled student at Oregon State University in at least 6 academic credits

·  Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and during entire period of employment

·  Must maintain at least a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (undergraduates) or 3.0 (graduates)

Preferred Qualifications:

·  Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for holistic (environmental, social, and economic) sustainability

·  Prior involvement in leadership activities, student organizations, event planning and/or outreach activities

·  Advanced bicycle mechanic skills and knowledge; able to perform basic bike safety checks, adjust brakes and shifters, and identify necessary repairs

·  Interest in promoting alternative forms of transportation

·  Maintain at least a cumulative and term GPA of 2.5 (undergraduates)

Terms:

·  Position dates: September 21, 2016 – June 9, 2017

·  Hours: average 10-15 hours each week

·  Pay rate $10.05 per hour

·  Office location: 3400 Campus Way, Corvallis, OR 97331

·  Fellows are required to attend bi-weekly supervisory meetings

·  Fellows are required to participate in monthly professional development with SSI as members of the Sustainability Fellows Cohort. These professional development activities will be paid hours with a 10 hour requirement per term.

·  Fellows are required to complete a reflective E-Portfolio and present on their learning on campus at the end of the year.
