CBA Bulletin

Transportation of Dangerous Goods Rules

Under the Federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), all shipments of lead-acid batteries must followthe TDG requirements. Shipments of “waste” lead-acid batteries are subject to additional Provincial transportation requirements for Hazardous Waste (see CBA Bulletins on “Waste” Batteries). This Bulletin provides a brief synopsis of the TDG requirements for lead-acid batteries.

For shipments of lead-acid batteries the Consignor Must Follow these three Rules:

Rule #1: Consignoruses a Carrier capable of transporting Dangerous Goods for shipments >150kgs. See Page 2 for TDG requirements for different size loads.

Consignor Rule #1: No TDG Compliant Carrier – No Shipment!

Rule #2: Consignor obtainsan adequate shipping document from the Carrier. See Page 2 for the required information on the Consignor’s shipping document.

ConsignorRule #2: No TDG Shipping Document from Carrier – No Shipment!

Rule #3: Consignorkeepsthe shipping documents on site for a minimum of two years. If theshipping document is sent to the Head Office or Accounting Dept., tell consignor to copy the shipping document and keep copy on site for two years.

ConsignorRule #3: Keep Copy ofTDG Shipping Document on Site for 2 years

If your customer is the consignor, tell them to follow these 3 rules for shipments >150kg and they will not have to worry about the TDG requirements.

Note that the above rules apply to TDG requirements on Roads and additional requirements may apply for shipments on vessels and by air.

Shipments of new UN2800 by road are exempt from TDG – used and waste UN2800 are not exempt.

If the batteries are being returned to your warehouse for testing and possibly reuse, the lead-acid batteries are not considered a “waste”. Batteries palletized and prepared for shipping to a smelter are automatically considered a “waste”. If the batteries are considered to be a “waste”, see CBA Bulletin for “Waste” batteries for additional shipping requirements.
