TRANSITION YEAR WORK EXPERIENCE

EAST GLENDALOUGH SCHOOL

INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYERS

Thank you for considering taking a student from EastGlendaloughSchool on Work Experience. Below are some details of the programme:

WHY WORK EXPERIENCE?

Work Experience introduces students to the world of work and helps them to develop their character, self-confidence and personality. It also gives them the opportunity to explore a number of careers.

THE STUDENTS.

The students are 15/16 years old and have completed the Junior Certificate examination. During their fourth year they continue their general education and also experience a wide range of different activities and subjects not normally found on the on the school curriculum.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

You are asked to give the student one or two full weeks of work experience in your company or organisation. At the end of the period we ask you to fill in a brief assessment form. This can be given to the student, or if you prefer, can be returned to the school.

Where possible, the student should be assigned to a member of your staff.

WHAT WORK CAN THE STUDENT DO?

Work experience usually takes one of two forms:

“Work experience”:This is when students are actually involved doing the work. Studentscan be given "hands on" tasks according to ability. They should not be left unobserved with awkward or difficult tasks.

“Work shadowing”: This is when the student spends time observing or "shadowing" a skilled worker.

The form of experience which you provide will largely depend on the nature of the company. Hopefully they will be able to do a mixture of the two.

Students will be briefed before they go on work experience to ensure they do their best to fit in with the company. The Department of Education have recently advised me that students may only work on construction sites if they possess a "SafetyPass", subject to the restrictions below.

ARE THE STUDENTS PAID?

No- after all, you are providing them with a valuable experience.
