Slide 2 - Introduction
Hello and welcome to Brunel University and to your new course. I’m sure you are settling in nicely by now. This induction is designed to introduce you to Blackboard Learn and how you can use it to support your studies at Brunel. You can navigate through the induction sections by clicking on the ‘Next’ button. If you would like to go back a step, simply click on the ‘Previous’ button. I will let you know when you need to move forward.

As you can see there are six sections in this induction. Please click on the first section ‘What is Blackboard Learn’ to proceed.

Slide 3 - What is Blackboard Learn
Blackboard Learn is Brunel’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Through it you can access a range of module information, including study guides, lecture slides and other module resources. Some departments may also require you to submit your assignments online through Blackboard. The VLE also provides access to administrative information, and once you are logged in you also have the ability to check your teaching timetable for the academic year.

Slide 4 - Checklist point 1 complete
Now that you are aware what Blackboard Learn is, please click on ‘Log in details’ to move to the next section

Slide 5 - Login details
This slide shows a conversation between a student (who is trying to find out their login details for Blackboard Learn) and a member of staff

Student: “Excuse me, can you tell me where I get my Blackboard login details from please?”

Staff member: “No problem! You’ll need a username and password. Your username can be found on your Brunel ID card – look! You use the same password for Blackboard as you do for your network account so you need to set up your Network account details before you can access Blackboard. You will receive your network username and be given the opportunity to set up your network password when you complete your online registration process on eVision. If you need more information you can look here: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/life/study-support/computer-services/accessing-the-network”

Student: “Thanks!”

To summarise…

Your Blackboard Learn login details are as follows:
Username: Student Number (e.g. 1201234) – this can be found on your student card
Password: Brunel Network Account Password

Slide 8 - Checklist point 3 complete
Great, hopefully you are now comfortable with logging in to Blackboard Learn. Please click on ‘A tour of your ‘My Blackboard’ page’ to move on

Slide 9 - My Blackboard Page
Once you are logged in you are taken to your ‘My Blackboard’ page. Click on any of the coloured numbers to find out more about that tool – there are 8 in total:

1.  My Courses – This is a list of the modules you are registered to take as part of your course at Brunel. You can click on the title of any module to enter it. Usually, the Module Leader will be listed beneath the course title listed as the ‘Instructor’.
If you notice that any of the modules you are meant to be studying are missing from this list please speak to your Taught Programmes Office or visit the Student Centre for help.

2.  Course Search – You are free to search through any module at Brunel, even if you are not registered for it. If you know the module code, simply type it in the ‘Course Search’ box and then click on the ‘Go’ button. Alternatively, click on any of the departmental folders underneath the ‘Course Catalogue’ header to browse through modules within those departments.
Please note that the course catalogue will only allow you to see a read-only version of modules, so if you are supposed to be taking assessments, etc then you must ensure that you are fully registered for the module and should ensure that the module shows in your ‘My Courses’ list.

3.  Useful Student Information – Useful information for students will be listed here.
You can view your teaching timetable by clicking on the ‘View your timetable and other useful information’ link. Please note that you will need to follow instructions on screen to log into the timetabling system.

4.  My Announcements – Institutional announcements will be listed here as well as announcements which have been posted within your modules. Module announcements will clearly show the code of the module they have been posted in.
You can click on any announcement title link to view the full announcement text. Please note, only a certain number of announcements will show in this view and you will need to click on the ‘more announcements’ link to view further announcements. You can also check announcements within each individual course.

5.  My Organisations – Blackboard organisations are areas which are created to provide administrative or non-module bearing information to students. All students should see organisations for central services such as the Computer Centre and the Library. Your department may also have an organisation to display administrative content so please look out for this. You can always speak to your departmental administrative team if you are unsure whether they use this feature.

6.  Browser Test – Click on the ‘Test your Browser’ button to check whether your web browser is properly configured to use Blackboard Learn
You will be notified of any software which is out of date and which could be updated to improve the performance of the system.

7.  Help – There are several ‘Help’ documents which you might like to refer to if you are having issues with Blackboard Learn.
If these resources do not help to resolve your issue we will cover how to get further support with Blackboard Learn later in this induction.

8.  Notifications (takes you to slide 10, see below)

Slide 10 - Notifications
On the right-hand side you will find your notifications menu, which can be opened by clicking on your name. Click on the numbers to the right to find out more about the notifications features available – there are 6 in all:

1.  Notifications overview – This feature provides an overview of all four notification sections – Posts, Updates, My Grades and Calendar. More detailed notification information can be found by clicking on the other notifications buttons

2.  Posts – The ‘Posts’ tool consolidates posts, comments and replies from across all your modules and organisations including posts from discussion boards, blogs, journals and wikis

3.  Updates – Updates from your modules (e.g. new content becoming available or updates to grades) will appear when you click here. You can change the notification settings by clicking on the cog wheel here.

4.  My Grades – If you have submitted work online your grades and feedback will show here. Please note that not all departments utilise online submission and feedback so you will need to check local departmental policies to find out whether this is done in your department. You can also check the ‘My Grades’ feature within each module to view feedback for that course.

5.  Calendar – Calendars for each of your modules and organisations will show here. You also have a ‘Personal’ calendar which you can use to record your own entries. Please note that not all module leaders use the calendar function in their modules so some may be blank.

6.  Settings – Use these links to learn how to change the text size when using Blackboard, how to activate your ‘High contrast settings’ as well as how to change other notification settings.
