Training programs and IPL activity – Prit Chahal June 2011

A scoping exercise was done to elicit current IPL (interprofessional learning) activity and attitude towardsdeveloping IPL in the future. A questionnaire was sent to all training programs , though Nottingham was excluded.

Results:

The scoping exercise revealed that a few training programs have developed some interprofessional learning activity involving practice managers and in the context of level III child protection. Most programs felt that they should take responsibility for developing interprofessional learning but others were not adverse to the deanery wide events as long as there was some input from training programs. Most programs would require six-month notice of such events to enable incorporation into their training schedule whilst one felt it needed 20 years of notice.

Conclusion:

Development of interprofessional activity should only really take place with close involvement of the training programs. This scoping exercise will be taken back to the CIPL group to redefine strategy.

N Notts / X / I have discussed this with the Director of Post Grad about perhaps developing this in the future. We obviously currently have guest speakers from other specialties but we haven’t sat down and perhaps developed a care pathway to improve the quality of care across both the general practice and the speciality concerned. At present there are concerns about the future of the local hospital and as a result we have not had much cross professional learning. In the future this may change.

Kettering / X / I think there are shared areas – professionalism, communicationskills we could develop and the experiences from the different professions useful? Joint project work so trainees see work from other professions perspective.

It would be very nice if it was but other educational priorities would have would have to be taken into account.
Dr Joel Chapman PD
N Notts / X / I am concerned that a Deanery wide event would be too big and not allow individual registrars and those from the specialities to truly learn from each other. I think this needs to be done in small groups but it could be done across perhaps 2 or 3 training programmes perhaps focussing on ST3s.

Dental/GP VTS share lot of common learning needs and could say look at the medical history – what do we each need to know – common dental/ red flag things our patients may present with - how our patients gain dental access – comm. Skills/consent /professional values/business skills.

Dr Joel Chapman PD
N Notts / X / Could be too big. The whole idea of this style of learning is to get individuals to work across specialities and feel involved in improving the quality of care. With a deanery wide event this could be just a huge lecture and only a few making decisions.
