INTRODUCTION

This TOURING LOGBOOK is for the benefit of paddlers who wish to keep a permanent record of their tours. This record of tours and journeys is helpful in recording your mileage in order to achieve various Star, Paddlepower, and Coaching awards. It is also used for the TOURING AWARD SCHEME. Entry into the scheme is open to all.

Each year a variety of touring and recreational events are organised by British Canoeing clubs, which are open to paddlers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Refer to the British Canoeing web site ( for the following information:-

  1. Touring and Recreation - for a listing of major events (Canoe Focus also publishes this information); and the rivers and navigations you can paddle by displaying the British CanoeingLicence on your boat.
  1. Access to non-tidal water – for advice and the legal position for access to and along inland waterways.
  1. Rivers Information Service - a contact list of British CanoeingLocal River Advisors and Coastal Advisors who can provide waterway and access information. Regional Access Officers (refer to the English Regions section) can also be contacted for assistance.
  1. The Scottish Canoe Association ( Welsh Canoe Association ( and Canoe Association of Northern Ireland ( each have Access Officers.
  1. Canoeing and the Environment – the care and conservation of the water environment when paddling.

Canoe Trails

Canoe trails and suggestions for paddles are regularly featured in Canoe Focus and posted on the British Canoeing web site. These can be found within the canoe near you map, or by going into the Go Canoeing section of the website

Rivers Access Campaign

British Canoeing seeks more access through the Rivers Access Campaign. Visit the web site for more information and how you can support the campaign.

BRITISH CANOEING TOURING AWARDS SCHEME

The Touring Award scheme has four components.

1. The Elementary Certificate.

2. The British Canoeing Annual Touring Awards, for annual distances.

3. The British Canoeing Annual Inter-Club Touring Trophy competition.

4. The British Canoeing Touring Awards, for cumulative distances. (Members only)

Conditions

  • All participants must use this British Canoeing Touring Logbook.
  • Mileage can be claimed on any type of water, but the emphasis is on inland touring.
  • Journeys using any type of mechanical propulsion will not count.
  • Competitive mileage may be included at the Annual Bronze level only.
  • Where two paddlers are in the same craft, both may record the mileage paddled together in their own logbooks. The Elementary Certificate is open to Members and non members.
  • The British Canoeing Elementary Certificate, the Annual Touring Awards and Inter-Club Touring Trophy Competition are open to members of British Canoeing and members of British Canoeing affiliated clubs.
  • On all issues arising under the scheme the Award Administrator's decision is final.

The Elementary Certificate

  • This is intended to encourage beginners in clubs and those attending outdoor pursuit courses or holidays to interest themselves in canoe touring, and to go on to earn a touring award.
  • It will be awarded on completion of 15 miles paddled.
  • The Certificate which is to be found at the back of this British Canoeing Touring Logbook will be completed and signed by the event leader.
  • A low cost badge is availablefor issue by event leaders.

THE BRITISH CANOEING ANNUAL TOURING AWARDS

Annual Bronze Touring Award for paddling 100 miles.

Annual Silver Touring Award for paddling 250 miles.

(The Silver Award can be claimed when the paddler has obtained the BronzeAward inthree consecutive years.)

Annual Gold Touring Award for paddling 500 miles.

(The Gold Award can be claimed when the paddler has obtained the SilverAward in three consecutive years.)

  • These awards are related to the mileage paddled in any twelve-month period.
  • Only one award can be claimed in any twelve-month period.
  • To claim an award, the logbook recording the mileage, with the fee must be sent to the Award Administrator.
  • A badge and certificate will be awarded and the logbook returned.

THE BRITISH CANOEING INTER-CLUB TOURING TROPHY COMPETITION

This is an annual competition between British Canoeing Affiliated Clubs. A trophy isawarded to the club with the highest number of points.

  • The points are awarded for the total number of miles paddled by the competing club's members.
  • Further points are added for British Canoeing Touring Awards won by members during the calendar year.
  • If any club member has won more than one award in the relevant year, only the points for the highest award will be admitted.
  • The effective date of an award is the one on the certificate.

Points Awarded for Inter-Club Competition

for each individual club member’s logged mile / 1 / point

for each Annual Silver Award / 50 / points
for each Annual Gold Award / 100 / points
for each British Canoeing Bronze Award / 100 / points
for each British Canoeing Silver Award / 200 / points
for each British Canoeing Gold Award / 400 / points
  • The competing club's members do not have to be individual members of British Canoeing.
  • A paddler may only support one club each year.
  • Entries for the Inter-Club Trophy must be made on the official entry form obtainable from the Award Administrator and must be received by the Award Administrator by the 15th January.
  • Club officials should hold their members supporting logbooks until the end of January as the winning club may be called upon to substantiate their entry.
  • There is no entry fee for entering the Annual Inter-Club competition.

THE BRITISH CANOEING TOURING AWARDS (MEMBERS ONLY)

The mileage required to gain a British CanoeingTouring Award is much greater than the British Canoeing Annual Awards, so no time limits are set.

British Canoeing Bronze Touring Award on completion of / 1000 miles
British Canoeing Silver Touring Award on completion of / 2500 miles
British Canoeing Gold Touring Award on completion of / 5000 miles
  • All logged miles will count, including mileage for which previous British Canoeing Awards have been obtained.
  • To claim an award the logbooks with the fee must be sent to the Award Administrator as soon as possible after the completion of the specified mileage.
  • A badge and certificate will be awarded and the logbook returned.
  • The British Canoeing Gold Touring Award will be presented to the recipients at a suitable venue.

The LOG details should include:

  • The river/s, canal/s or other water paddled.
  • The ingress and egress points.
  • The event and organising club, and any personal recollections.
  • Please state how the miles were calculated, from event information, a guide, or an OS map.
  • Applications for an award should be counter-signed by a club coach/official.
