EXPERT'S PROFILE
When Medicare implemented the Prospective Payment System in 1983, the assessment of patients’ severity of illness became a critical issue. Dr. Mohlenbrock responded by founding a technology and consulting company, Verras, and developed the Acuity Index Method; which is a risk-adjusted clinical information system for monitoring and improving quality and cost-efficient inpatient care. (Verras received the American Hospital Association’s exclusive endorsement in 2015.) Recognizing information interoperability to be another compelling need for health care and among mission-critical first-responders within Homeland Security, he founded Crossflo Systems in 2002 to fulfill this national, post- 9/11 imperative.
The 2010 Federal Accountable Care Act paved the way for bundled-payments that require hospitals and physicians to share global reimbursements based on quality and efficiencies. His experience in the area of pay-for-performance led to the creation of Verras’ Medical Value Index (MVI), which is a patented, objective means to quantify value of hospitals’ outcomes and assist providers with the distribution of hospitals’ and physicians’ payments for Global and bundled-payment models.
Dr. Mohlenbrock received his BS degree from the University of Illinois and his MD from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He holds fellowships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Physician Leadership. He is a noted lecturer and has published numerous articles on measuring and improving the quality and cost efficiency of medical care.
He practices as a member of Torrey Pines Orthopedics on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital at 9850 Genesee Ave, Suite 210, La Jolla CA, 92037.
