Events beyond living memory (national or global) commemorated through festivals or anniversaries

Why do countries have special national days of celebration? Learn about the history behind important national days such as Canada Day, National day of Poland, Indian Republic Day, Peru Day and whether they celebrate unification or independence. Design a celebratory Google doodle for the national day of the country of your choice.

Block G: National Days [5 sessions] / Main outcome: History

By the end of this block children will achieve the following outcomes:
S1-S4 follow a similar format to offer a simple taster of the wealth of facts, traditions, cultures, diversity, geography, arts and crafts of each chosen country.
This Block could be used as a Special focus week; with 4 KS1 classes joining together and each class teacher focusing on one country; chn travel around the classes see Overview resource sheet for sessions 1-5. / ·  Learn about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries.
·  Name and locate the world’s 7 continents and 5 oceans.
·  Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify countries, continents and oceans.
·  Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
·  Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.
·  Learn about the work of a range or artists, craftmakers and designers, making links to their own work.
·  Participate in discussion about and explain and discuss their understanding of information books and other material.
Session 1 History, Geography, Art and English
Canada Day 1st July
Chn will research Canada finding out more about the location, geography, culture, flora and fauna of the country. / ·  Locate Canada on world map and name appropriate continent/oceans.
·  Research to find out about Canada in general and when, how and why Canada Day is commemorated.
·  Use some of the customs and traditions of Canada to produce own work.
·  Eat a traditional Canadian foodstuff.
Session 2 History, Geography, Art and English
Poland: National Independence Day 11th November
Chn will research Poland finding out more about the location, geography, culture flora and fauna of the country. / ·  Locate Poland on world map and name appropriate continent/seas and surrounding countries.
·  Research to find out about Poland in general and when, how and why National Independence Day is commemorated.
·  Use something of the customs and traditions to produce own work.
·  Eat a traditional Polish foodstuff.
Session 3 History, Geography, Art and English
India: Republic Day 26th Jan and Independence Day 15th August
Chn will research India finding out more about the location, geography, culture flora and fauna of the country. / ·  Locate India on world map and name appropriate continent/oceans and surrounding countries.
·  Research to find out about India in general and when, how and why the National Days are commemorated.
·  Use something of the customs and traditions to produce own work.
·  Eat a traditional Indian foodstuff.
Session 4 History, Geography, Art and English
Peru: Fiestas Patrias 28th and 29th July
Chn will research Peru finding out more about the location, geography, culture flora and fauna of the country. / ·  Locate Peru on world map and name appropriate continent/oceans and surrounding countries.
·  Research to find out about Peru in general and when, how and why Fiestas Patrias is commemorated.
·  Use something of the customs and traditions to produce own work.
·  Enjoy a traditional Peruvian treat.
Session 5: Art and English
Google Doodle
Using research completed in previous sessions chn will create a Google doodle to represent their chosen country on the commemoration of their National Day. / ·  Use research from S1-S4 to create a ‘Google doodle’ for one chosen country.
·  Be able to explain why they have selected the images they have used to represent that country.
