May Long Weekend Dive Extravaganza 2007

Safety Briefing Information for Dive Masters

Greeting and introduction of boat operator, DM, helpers. Content of safety briefing:

  • Explain procedure re. Recording air and time in/out. Not to have less than 500 PSI.
  • Use safe dive practices
  • Plan your dive, dive your plan
  • Conduct buddy checks
  • Ensure you don’t do reverse dive profiles
  • Safety stops to be done (3 minute minimum)
  • 80’ maximum depth
  • Buddy = 2. Must dive in buddy team and surface with your buddy (reminder – in the exceptional case of getting separated; if you do not find your buddy after one minute, surface and report to DM)
  • Be aware of indicators of current, down-wellings. This is a high current area.
  • Minimize contact with walls and life (if you need to touch down, use one finger).
  • No take, no touch.
  • Diver recall procedure: Bottom of boat will be hit 3 times. Pause. 3 times. Pause.
  • Provide procedure for exiting and entering boats and picking up of divers after surfacing.
  • If you need assistance, or have special equipment, let the DM know
  • Note that the DM is responsible for safety decisions on the boat. If it is felt that a diver is unsafe, the DM has the right to refuse to allow the diver to dive.
  • Dive Briefing: Description of site with suggested route to follow.

B. Missing Diver

  • Initiate diver recall procedure - Bottom of boat will be hit 3 times. Pause. 3 times. Pause
  • Immediately when it is noted that diver is missing, throw a floatation device into the water (to note carriage of current). Note GPS if possible. Call safety boat on designated channel. Switch to channel indicated by safety. Indicate diver missing. Further decisions dependent on time elapsed.
  • Note: Maximum wait for calling authorities is 10 minutes after diver is noted as missing. Safety boat to proceed with alerting Coast Guard, etc. Numbers as in scenario A above.
  • Safety boat to collect 1 DM from another vessel and bring to vessel making call. Proceed with search.
  • Note: Other divers (not participating in search) to be brought back to Telegraph Cove.
  • In case of accident, victim gear to be left as is for RCMP investigation. Record cylinder pressure.
