Mission

Provide expertise on HSE best practices and compliance in laboratories & support site business partners to improve and sustain HSE performance while not jeopordizing quality and productivity. Provide HSE customer support to protect worker health and safety and minimizing impact to the environment.

Key accountabilities

Lab Safety Specialist (40%)

  • Ensures laboratories are working in Health Safety and Environmental compliance with applicable regulations, codes and standards;
  • Conduct laboratory inspections to verify compliance with HSE regulations, codes and standards;
  • Assess hazards associated with the use biological and chemical agents;

HSE business support partner (40%)

  • Tracks Health Safety and Environmental compliance;
  • Drive conformance to the site’s HSE management systems;
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to management and staff;
  • Proactively monitors business performance and trends and provide regular updates to management;
  • Facilitates hazard identification and assists in managing HSE risk with the goal of risk elimination;
  • Actively participates in Level 1 and 2 +QDCI meetings for the business functions they support;
  • Participate in HSE inspections;
  • Supports hazard and near miss reporting;
  • Drive on-time completion of accident reporting and investigations;
  • Ensure CAPAs are appropriate to prevent recurrence and drive on-time completion of CAPAs;
  • Drive implementation of immediate corrections to issues that don’t require a long term action plan;
  • Coordinate and/or deliver HSE-specific training;
  • Spend ~80% of their time in the business area they support (specifically on the shop floor);
  • Support departmental manager in the PASS program;
  • Acts in a timely fashion to address and/or escalates significant high risk items that require immediate attention;
  • Be flexible in providing HSE service support across shifts (min 2 shifts per month on off-shifts); and
  • Communicates back to the HSE team on business performance, current business, lessons learned, wins, and other HSE business;

Other duties as assigned(10%)

  • Apply elements of the HSE management system;
  • Conduct HSE risk assessments as required;
  • Enforce change management techniques (HSE Requirements for Projects, change control assessments, etc.) to ensure HSE risks are identified and controlled in the design phases of projects;
  • Deliver approved training;
  • Simplification of HSE programs and procedures to make them more effective to managers and shop floor employees;
  • Participate in and use HSE communication tools (HSE alerts, HSE blotter, etc.);
  • Regularly updates Accident and Incident database;
  • Use the site’s CAPA tracking system in a timely fashion; and
  • Participate in the weekly HSE on-call rotation for providing guidance and/or response for after-business hour situations and x5555 calls.

Breadth of responsibility (global/regional/country/site):

Responsible for (insert area of responsibilty here eg. Bulk Manufacturing) at the Toronto site.

Freedom to act, level of autonomy:

  • Works independently within the framework of the Site's HSE Management System; and
  • Seeks approval from manager for key decisions related to Safety & Hygiene, Environment and Sustainability, and/or Biosafety matters.

Education and experience

Specific degree, duration of experience (Required to hold the job):

  • Minimum Bachelors Degree in Sciences, with a focus in microbiology;
  • 7 years of practical HSE experience;
  • Knowledge of Safety, Biosafety (Canadian Biosafety Standards), and other regulatory requirements a plus;
  • 2-3 minimim previous microbiological laboraory experience; and
  • Experience with managing biomedical and hazardous waste.

  • Knowledge of systems used by HSE such as Isotrain, Trackwise and QeDoc;
  • Coaching and mentoring of managers; and
  • Abiliy to work transverally across functions/departments and strong team work within the HSE team.
