This report highlights the most serious MIOSHA general industry safety andhealth violations for fiscal year 2016. This report is compiled from material generated by the Technical Services Division in MIOSHA. Since 1999, this report has been presented at the Michigan Safety Conference.

This report is intended for use in CET Division programs which are designed to assist in preventing the recurrence of workplace injuries and illnesses. If unabated, workplace injuries and illnesses can have a costly impact on businesses.

MIOSHA safety and health standards have been established for employers and employees to follow, to further the effort to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses. Implementation of a safety and health management system (SHMS) aids in the elimination/minimization of employee exposure to hazards and is your best defense against workplace injuries and illnesses. An effective SHMS has seven primary elements: Management Commitment, Employee Involvement, Workplace Analysis, Hazard Prevention and Control, Safety and Health Training, Program Evaluation and Improvement, and Coordination and Communication on Multiemployer Worksites. Additional information can be found in the CET SHMS Guidelines handout (SP#2) or the Construction SHMS Guidelines (SP#1).

The intent of this report is to provide insights to preventative measures that can be taken to avoid the potential hazards cited by the violations. MIOSHA CET consultants can provide assistance at no charge and help you evaluate and build your SHMS. Effective SHMSs can reduce the occurrence of workplace injuries and illnesses and the cost of doing business in Michigan.

Any inquiries regarding this report may be addressed to the MIOSHA CET Division at 517-284-7720.
