The Rafting Trip:

This package allows for a choice between the Kakwa River or the Smoky River. Both rivers are 90 km river trips, with camping on-shore at night. The Smoky is great for families, youths or those who want a wilderness experience that is not too extreme. The river is both mellow and exciting – long stretches of gentle floats are interspersed with fun rapids and big volume waves. The mighty Kakwa is one of Alberta’s most exciting whitewater rivers, with people traveling from all over to run it. A spectacular series of class 3 and 4 ledges and holes are complemented by impressive trains of standing waves. The Kakwa feeds into the Smoky River, so on day 2 you will hit the best of the Smoky River rapids. The Kakwa is mostly rain or snow fed, so we usually offer this trip only in late May, June and early July, please inquire. The backdrop for aboth trips is the wild northern boreal forest of northern Alberta. Moose, elk, deer and bear tracks crisscross on the pristine beaches. Later trips are often graced by the northern lights.

The rafting trip departs from our office; it is a 1-hour drive to the river. Your guides will be waiting, prepping the boats. You will be asked to change into your wetsuit at this time, and be served a small snack. The guides will pack your gear on the boat and get it ready to launch. Guides will do a safety talk once they have readied the boats, and we launch! We spend about 2 hrs floating before we stop on shore to have lunch, then another 2 hrs in big water until we make camp for the night. This routine can vary depending on the length of your trip and water levels. Once camp is set (everyone helps with this), the guides prepare supper. After, the evening is yours; enjoy the campfire, stroll the beach, etc. The next morning the guides prepare a terrific breakfast. After, everyone helps pack up and load the boats. The first 2-3 hours are spent hitting the big waves. After lunch, the last 3 hours are spent floating to the end of the trip.

All meals, snacks and beverages are included on both trips (see below for sample menus). Transportation to and from town are included for the rafting trip. Tents are included on the horse trip, they are not included on the rafting trip, but sleeping bags and tents are available to rent. ($15/night/tent or sleeping bag/pad combo). All required rafting gear is included. Listed below is what you will need to bring for both trips. Transport from Grande Prairie, Jasper or Hinton can be arranged, please inquire for rates.

The Horse Trip:

The horseback trip takes you deep into Willmore Wilderness Park and the wildest lands of the Canadian Rockies to Adams Creek. The trail begins by winding through a series of large open meadows, bordered by spruce-fur forests. The Berland River meanders back and forth through the valley and provides scenic river crossings. After a 3 1/2 hour ride you will arrive at your camp at Adams Creek. Historical sites and a beaver pond can be explored nearby. We can do day rides include the Adam's Creek Fire Look-out Tower. It is a 45-minute shuttle from the office to the staging area, where a pack train and saddle horses await you. Once your personal affects have been packed, your saddle properly fitted for your comfort, and your lunch loaded into the saddle-bags, you are off.

Pre Trip Orientation:

Overnight trip guests usually come into town the night before. We do arrange accommodation, please inquire. Please come to our office to finish your trip payment and do a pre-trip orientation. This includes filling out the waiver & medical form, and getting sized into rafting gear. In the morning, either meet us with bags all ready to go, or travel out to the Berland River Staging area to meet the horse outfitters. If you are going rafting first, please come in the clothes you wish to wear around camp in the evening and your wet shoes. Have your swimsuit on under your clothes. If your horse trip is first, please come in the morning in the clothes you will be riding in. It is a 45-minute shuttle from the office to the staging area, where a pack train and saddle horses await you. Once your personal affects have been packed, your saddle properly fitted for your comfort, and your lunch loaded into the saddle-bags, you are off.
