Welcome to Physical Science! Below are some rules that will allow us to have a safe and successful year

1.  Be respectful

·  To the teacher, to your peers, and to yourself

2.  Use educational time wisely

·  This is your chance to learn and ASK QUESTIONS

3.  Come prepared to learn

·  Do you have your binder, planner, pen/pencil, paper, etc.?

4.  Be on time

·  You miss information when you’re late

5.  Dress appropriately

·  Especially for labs- for your safety and the safety of others

6.  No phones on RED

·  Red means I need your full attention

7.  Don’t leave the classroom

·  I’ll miss you… and you’ll miss important information

Policies and Procedures

1.  You are required to have a 3-ring binder for this class and to keep the binder organized and updated. This binder will be a part of your midterm and final exam grade even if you are exempt.

2.  There is a participation grade in this class. You will either receive a 1 or a 0 for a daily participation grade. At the end of the week the grade will be put in out of 5 days. There is no partial credit for participation. In order to get a 1 for your participation grade you must have all of your supplies, stay off of your phone, ask or answer at least one question, actively pay attention, and do not sleep. Just showing up to class is not enough!! If you are absent you will receive a zero for that day’s participation. At the end of the semester two zero’s will be dropped.

3.  There is a lab fee for this class. Please bring $10, in correct change, within the first two weeks. Make checks out to SHS Physical Science

4.  You are expected to be in your seat and working on the bell work when the tardy bell rings. I do allow two extra minutes after the tardy bell to use the restroom only if you have asked before hand. Please understand that this cuts into your bell work time and if you are unable to complete your bell work because of this, this privilege will be suspended. If you are late to class, you must have a tardy slip or a signed, dated, and timed note from another teacher.

5.  If you leave the classroom for ANY reason you must have YOUR signed planned and you must sign out and sign in. There is no restroom use during class nor are you allowed to go to the vending machines during class times.

6.  There is a student supply table. It is your responsibility to keep it clean and organized. Use the supplies wisely and be sure to return them. Once the supplies are gone- that’s it.

7.  Extra Credit is only offered BEFORE each test. Information on extra credit will be handed out separately and posted on Ms. Jansen’s website. I WILL NOT allow students to submit more than one Extra Credit assignment at a time. Please do not come to me at the end of the semester asking for extra credit opportunities. Extra Credit can be beneficial for students that are actively participating in class and doing their work. This is NOT a replacement for class work and homework.

8.  Be careful in the lab and follow all lab directions and safety rules. There is a penalty for late lab reports. There is a 10% grade reduction for every day the lab is late. Horseplay is not allowed and may cause you to fail the lab. The rules to know are on the Science Lab Safety Contract. A copy will be available on my website.

9.  Tutoring is available (by appointment) after school from 3:45 to 4:30. Tutoring is also available before school every day except my duty day from 7:30 to 8:00. You are required to have a pass to come before school. Make an appointment if you need tutoring during another time. Occasionally, the school requires my presence at meetings, but I will inform you if I am not available for tutoring.

10.  You can eat and drink in the classroom as long as you don’t make a mess. This privilege is suspended during assessments. You cannot eat food that requires a utensil. Your drink must be in a covered container to prevent spills. Any issue or argument with this policy will result in the suspension of the policy for the entire class, or just for some students, at Mrs. Jansen’s discretion. You MUST clean up after yourself. THERE ARE NO FOOD OR DRINKS ALLOWED IN THE LAB.

11.  If you fail a test you have the opportunity to make some points back. You can come after school on the very next Tuesday or Thursday and correct the test completely. You must explain your answers to Ms. Jansen. This will allow you to receive a maximum of 65% on the test. Other assessments do not have this option.

12.  Follow all school rules as set forth in the planner

13.  Supplies required for this class are: 3-ring binder for notes and handouts, lined paper, a writing instrument of your choice, your planner, and a dark blue or black pen for assessments.

14.  Grading policy is as follows

25% Tests

20% Labs

15% Quizzes

10% Homework

5% Bell Work

5% Participation

20% Midterm/Final Exam

* note: there are no exemptions for the midterm

15.  Students and parents may sign up for alerts by texting the number 81010. In the message area write “@fall2016ph”. You can also download the Remind App and search for my class using @fall2016ph. Parents are able to contact me through the app for one-on-one communication or by using my email .

This signed sheet should be the first page in your 3-ring binder. If you lose it, there is a copy on my website. There will be a supplies and documents check on Friday of the second week of school. This check includes the class supplies, the safety contract, the class rules, your planner, and the introductory student survey. This is for a quiz grade. You are required to have all class supplies every day in class with you.

Please sign below that you have read and agree with these class rules.

SOUTHHAVEN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE LAB SAFETY CONTRACT

Science is a hands-on laboratory class. Students will be doing many activities that will require the use of chemicals, laboratory equipment, and other items that if used incorrectly can be hazardous. Safety in the science classroom is the number one priority for students, teachers, and parents. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in this student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times. The student and a parent/guardian must sign their copy. Please read the entire contract before you sign.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.

2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask your teacher before proceeding with the activity.

3. Never work alone in the laboratory. No student may work in the science classroom without the presence of a teacher.

4. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so.

5. Perform only those experiments authorized by your teacher. Carefully follow all instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are not allowed.

6. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not use laboratory glassware as containers for food or beverages.

7. Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times.

8. Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the teacher immediately, no matter how trivial it seems. Immediately (and loudly) yell out the teacher's name to get the teacher's attention. Do not panic.

9. Check with your teacher for correct disposal procedures for chemicals and solutions.

10. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals or lab equipment. Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments.

11. Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. Do not wander around the room, distract other students, startle other students, or interfere with the laboratory experiments of others.

12. Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including: fire extinguisher, eye wash station and shower. Know where the fire alarm and the exits are located.

13. Know what to do if there is a fire drill during a laboratory period; containers must be closed, all flames extinguished, and any electrical equipment turned off.

14. For most laboratory activities students will be required to wear safety goggles. In such cases contact lenses must be removed and alternative corrective eyewear used.

15. Dress properly during a laboratory activity. Long hair, dangling jewelry, and loose or baggy clothing are a hazard in the laboratory. Long hair must be tied back, dangling jewelry removed and baggy clothing must be secured. Shoes must completely cover the foot. No sandals allowed on lab days.

HANDLING CHEMICALS, GLASSWARE, AND EQUIPMENT

16. All chemicals in the laboratory should be considered as dangerous. Avoid handling chemicals with unprotected hands. Always use appropriate equipment to distribute chemicals. Do not taste, or smell any chemicals unless instructed to do so.

17. Never return unused chemicals to their original container unless you are directed to do so.

18. Never remove chemicals or other materials from the laboratory area.

19. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Notify the teacher immediately if glass is broken.Examine glassware before each use. Never use chipped, cracked, or dirty glassware.

20. If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask the teacher for help.

HEATING SUBSTANCES

21. Use of a Bunsen burner or hot plate is only allowed in the presence of the teacher. Take care that hair, clothing, hands and other materials are a safe distance from the hot plate at all times. Remove chemical containers from the area where heating is taking place.

22. Heated glassware remains very hot for a long time. They should be set aside in a designated place to cool, and picked up with caution. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water as it may shatter. Use tongs or “hot hands” if necessary.
