MEMORANDUM
TO: Students Who Are Considering a Change of Program Option
FROM: Chair, Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology
As of October 1993, the CECP faculty has adopted the following policy and procedure regarding requests from students to change Program Options. Please read the following materials carefully, paying special attention to deadlines. On the next page is the “Request to change Program Options” form that must be signed after you have met with your advisor. Because changing options should not be considered lightly or without accurate information, it is imperative that you discuss this issue with your advisor so that you can make an informed decision. Please note that it is not up to your advisor to approve or deny your request for change of program option. The advisor’s signature merely indicates that you have discussed the issue with him or her. This assures the Admissions committee for the program option you are requesting transfer to that you have all the necessary information to submit an appropriate rationale and request for your program change.
Change in Master’s Degree Program Options
Students are admitted to a specific program option when they enter the Department. It is assumed they have made this decision after reviewing the choices available. Consequently, the changing of options is not a routine matter. Since management of departmental resources is related to the number of students in various program options, requests for changes will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances and only with sufficient justification.
Criteria
An option change will be permitted only when there is significant change in career/vocational goals and/or when there is a major modification in desired training/educational emphasis.
Procedure
Students who desire a change in option must submit a request, in writing, to M. A. Admissions & Enrollment Management after discussing the matter with their advisor. Such requests must contain sufficient justification and rationale.
The CECP Department reviews these requests three times a year. Requests should be submitted to M. A. Admissions & Enrollment Management by January 15th, May 15th or September 15th through the Departmental Office. The program option you are requesting changing to may request an interview.
All requests will then be submitted to the Departmental Chair for final disposition. The Chair will notify the student, advisor, and the Committee.
