Main purpose of the role
To provide support and tuition in order to develop literacy and numeracy skills for students within the schools Alternative Education Programme. Other subjects include: Food Technology, Art and Design and Outdoor Education
The role will be under the guidance of teachers and under the direct supervision of the Engagement Programme Manager.
The role requires autonomous planningwith guidance from literacy and numeracy subject leaders.
To be responsible for the planning of engaging and motivating programmes and to deliver them successfully, achieving positive outcomes for pupils.
The primary focus is to engage and maintain pupils on task and achieve positive education outcomes, to help them succeed in further education and training.

Core responsibilities and tasks
Key duties:
  • To plan, produce and deliver innovative and engaging programmes which will prepare students for their role in the community.
  • To produce and maintain a suitable programme of Literacy, Numeracy (Accredited by Edexcel Functional Skills Qualifications) and other engaging subject areas such as ICT, Food Technology, Art and Design, Outdoor Education, Gardening (Accredited by AQA Unit Award).
  • To maintain all paperwork and files.
  • To daily communicate, liaise and work under the supervision of the Engagement Programme Manager.
  • To give weekly feedback on pupils at Team meetings.
  • To write summary reports at various points throughout the year.
  • To attend all training, Staff meetings, Team meetings as requested.
  • To maintain good relationships with Pupils, Teachers, Parents and Outside Agencies.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s needs and formulate a programme of intervention to meet these needs.
  • Deliver individual literacy interventions for struggling readers both in the Skills Base and the main school.
  • To work as part of a Team.
  • To attend and engage in regular supervision with the Engagement Programme Manager.
  • To communicate regularly with colleagues and Parents on individual pupils’ programme and progress.
  • To complete 1:1 sessions for pupils as appropriate.
  • To provide advice and guidance on strategies to Pupils and Parents.
  • To be responsible for own continuous professional development.
  • To arrange and attend reviews and meetings and provide reports for these meetings.
  • To communicate with and work in conjunction with Outside Agencies when necessary.
  • To provide optimism, understanding, trust, empathy and acceptance in relationships with pupils, giving them the opportunity for growth and change.
  • To ensure that pupil confidentiality is protected.
  • Use teaching and learning objectives to plan, evaluate and adjust lessons/work plans as appropriate within agreed systems of supervision.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver learning to individuals modifying and adapting activities as necessary.
  • Provide support to pupils with severe learning, behavioural, communication, social or sensory difficulties.
  • Monitor pupils conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult or very challenging issues
  • Assess, record and report on development, progress and attainment
  • Assess the needs of pupils and use knowledge and skills to support pupils’ learning.
  • Develop and implement individual development plans for pupils including attendance at, and written contribution to, reviews.
  • Support the role of parents/carers in pupils’ learning and contribute to meetings with parents/carers to provide constructive feedback on pupil progress/achievement etc
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures
  • Manage the work and development of other classroom support staff
  • Be responsible for the preparation, maintenance and control of stocks of materials and resources
  • Provide pastoral care to pupils or tutor group (one on one)
  • Take responsibility for pupils who are not working to the normal timetable
  • Invigilate exams and tests
  • Take responsibility for the presentation of displays

  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings, including staff meetings.
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and an annual performance review as required. Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others.
  • Supervise students on visits, trips and out-of-school activities as required.
  • Provide clerical/admin support as required.
