To Install Virtual PC on a non-Intel Mac (OS X):

1) Get serial numbers for both programs by registering at MSDNAA (ask your instructor)

2) Download Virtual PC for Mac from the CS department

http://theory.cs.colorado.edu/MSDNAA/VirtualPC

3) Burn this .iso file to a CD. It must be opened from the CD in order for the install program to work properly.

4) This gives you an older version (V PC 2004) that can be upgraded (this step can be done later) to the newest version (7.0.2) for free either on Microsoft’s website or on Version Tracker

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/1006

5) Now download the Windows XP disk image (almost 600 MB):

http://theory.cs.colorado.edu/MSDNAA/en_winxp_pro_with_sp2.iso

Burn this image to CD.

6) Run Virtual PC and create a new PC (File Menu > NEW ). Each PC you create will take up a chunk of space on your hard disk so it’s best to only create one PC. You will be using Windows XP professional.

7) This will bring up a black terminal window . Down in the lower left you’ll see an image of a CD. Click on this and select “Capture CD image”. Select the CD you burned with windows XP on it and then the file you burned to it.

8) Important…you will see a message only briefly that says something like “hit any key to boot from CD”. You must strike a key while this message is showing. If you miss it, you may have to re-capture the CD image.

9) This will begin a the process of installing Windows XP. Wait. This will take a while…probably at least 15 minutes.

10) The program will reboot your “PC” and Windows will run and install itself. You’ll need the serial number at this point to finish the process. This will also take many minutes.

11) You can now run Virtual PC and install software on it like you would a PC.
