Matt, I finally got around to reading the document. Outstanding concept, and about time we
triggered it at Oregon State University. I know personally of some students who would jump on
this, as a value added opportunity.
I had a few thoughts, in addition to Cary and Larry's.
I do not know if this is the case, but I suggest that since Steven Strauss is the primary instructor,
the course BI 435 GENES AND CHEMICALS IN AGRICULTURE: VALUE AND RISK (3) be shown as
FS 435 and that it's crosslisted as BI 435 and TOX 435.
Also, in the course catalog I cannot find BI 430H BIOTECHNOLOGIES: AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND
RESOURCE ISSUES (3). I have looked high and low. So, either you have the wrong course
number or an incorrect entry. (I know Steven teaches a course on Biotechnology -- I have
copied in Steven so he can chime in.)
Finally, does it make sense to include Range courses and Horticulture courses in the 16 credits
of electives?

Matt and Sonny: I agree with Larry and think this represents a valuable opportunity for students. I want
to point out that Kate Lajtha and BPP are now in the College of Agricultural Sciences. I suggest that the
proposal reflect this change.
Thanks.

Hello Sonny and Matt
After going through the proposal “lightly” I find nothing of concern to me. Previous liaison responses
more than adequately address any questions that came into my mind as I went through it. The concept
of the double degree appeals to me since the students gain disciplinary technical competence to
support the sustainability expertise.

Subject: Liaison
Greetings Dean Ramaswamy,
I write to you somewhat embarrassed given the late date, but a group of faculty have been working on a
Category I proposal for a double-degree program in sustainability for over two years now. Several AREC
faculty were involved from start to finish, including Susan Capalbo, but we somehow neglected to
submit a formal liaison request to your office (or have not yet received a reply to early requests). At this
time the Faculty Senate Executive Committee would like to see liaison with AgSci on the double-
degree. I would greatly appreciate your review of this attached proposal and any comments or
questions you might have.
Cheers,
ms
