ASSIGNMENTS AND PROCEDURES:

  1. Course requirements include a research project, speeches, and a comprehensive mid-term and final exams. Failure to complete these major requirements may result in failure of this course. English 10 is required for graduation.
  1. There will be assorted quizzes and performance tasks, announced and unannounced, on reading assignments. There will be a major assessment at the conclusion of each particular literature unit.
  1. Assignment procedures:

WRITE NEATLY!!! (If it can’t be read, it will be marked wrong or returned with no grade)

MLA style heading is required for all typed papers—UPPER LEFT CORNER (Please learn the properformat in order to earn full credit for your assignments)

Written assignments must be submitted online, printed(when stipulated)or written in BLUE/BLACK INK. No colored ink, please!

  1. Homework—especially reading and vocabulary—is an essential part of this course. Homework will be checked, may be given point values, or used as a quiz grade.Late submissions will not be accepted. Students who are absent can find copies of missed worksheets in the back of the room and on the course website if possible (some assignments may not be digital). Specific daily assignments are written on the daily agenda located on the sideboard, and can be found on the class website. Students are also expected to email the instructor directly when absent in order to inquire about missed readings and tasks.
  1. Because scheduling the required speeches for each person in the class is difficult, you MUST be prepared and give your speech at the designated time. Failure to do the speech on the assigned time will result in a drop of 10 percent each day it is late.

STUDENT RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Be on time — You will be dismissed on time, so it is your responsibility to arrive on time(or to present asigned pass upon your arrival when late). Chronic lateness will result in after-school detentions. Completing a test and/or a science lab is not an excuse for being late to class and will not be accepted as such.
  1. Missing class — Missing English class for ANYTHING is a privilege. It is your responsibility to notify me in advance of your need to be excused, not anyone else’s. You are responsible for all work missed and for homework assignments. It is in your best interest to complete work ahead of time if possible.
  1. Behavior — I treat my students with respect, and I expect it in return. This also applies to your classmates. I do try to keep a familiar and open atmosphere in the classroom with a good sense of humor and friendliness. Do not take advantage of this by mistreating people for the sake of trying to be funny.
  1. Seating — Seats will be assigned. This class will operate on small and large group discussion, so you should know everyone on a first name basis.
  1. Makeup work—It is your right to be able to makeup work when legitimately excused; it is your responsibility to adhere to the student handbook procedure for making the work up. As an Honors level student, I do expect to hear from you via email requesting assignments you have missed. I will not hold up the start of class to give out any missing tasks. Students may also inquire about missing work at the end of the school day; I am here until 3pm or later by appointment.
  1. Grading----I calculate grades using a system of total earned points divided by total possible points to equal a percentage.
  1. Signing Out—It is your right to expect lavatory and health suite privileges (emergencies only); it is your responsibility not to abuse this right. You must sign your name, destination and time out in the sign-out book and write the time in when you return. If you do not sign out properly or take too much time, you will lose your sign-out privileges. Signing out will be limited tothe first 5 minutes of class.
  1. School property—It is your right to have a clean classroom, and all of us have the responsibility to do our part to keep this classroom clean.In addition, you have the right to use textbooks; it is your responsibility to treat the books carefully.

9. Food and drink – Gum and snacks arenot allowed in class. Please dispose of any upon entering class.
