ANNEXURE-2

SOCIETY OF GRAMA VIKASA SARADHI, KOVILAPALEM

ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2006-2007

Ladies and Gentlemen, GVS welcomes you all to this meeting. GVS also heartily appreciates the encouragement given and cooperation rendered by you all in discharging its duties during the past several years.

“Selfless service” is GVS motto, and how far we have succeeded in our ideal we leave it to your judgment. It is the laid down policy of GVS to effectively serve the people by efficiently deploying the limited resources available at its disposal and limiting its spread of activities accordingly. Throughout the last seven years the only source of finance to GVS had been its well-wishers.

Major Activities:

  1. Social Care of Destitute Senior Citizen (SCODESC)

Starting with 16 beneficiaries in the year 2000, this scheme, by March 2007, is able to help 30 destitute senior citizens. Initially the beneficiaries of this scheme were localized to the villages of Tattabanda Pancayati of Ravikamatam Mandalam. Then on further beneficiaries from Gorlapalem, Gudipa, pedabaljipalem and Kotturu villages of the adjacent three Mandals were listed and served upon. Over the years, undergoing minor changes, by the year 2005-2006, the disbursal of the benefits remained to only the item of rice. Besides the feedback from the beneficiaries, the main reason for the change was the lucky boon from the State Government in form of disbursal of rice at subsidized rates to the senior citizen and selecting GVS SCODESC beneficiaries among the listed ones.

Further, the State Government as increased the quantum of the Old Age Pension from Rs.100/- to Rs.200/- per month, w.e.f April 2006. Keeping this in view GVS decided to delist any such senior citizen from its SCODESC. Accordingly, by 6th September 06 only 40 destitute senior citizens are left on the GVS scheme.

GVS also celebrated the Senior Citizen’s Day, the 1st October 2005 in a benefiting manner. To honour, all the, the then 52 SCODESC beneficiaries, GVS organized a function at Kovilapalem, in its School premises. Besides the GVS Governing Body members, dignitaries from the State Bank of Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam; Sri Prasad Rao, the Asst.Commissioner (Income tax), Visakhapatnam; Sri B.Venkateswara Rao, the GVS Auditor; the local MRO, the MDO and the local leaders graced the occasion. The most heartening part of the event was the free distribution of new dresses to the senior citizen by the staff of the SBH. All the senior citizen, who attended the function were transported to and from their residences, very carefully on Autos.

On 23rd April 2006,Sri Krishna Kumar accompanied by his wife, Srimati Tulasi Kumari, went around each of the villages covered by the GVS SCODESC scheme and distributed new clothes to each of the 52 beneficiaries.

  1. GVS Upper Primary School:

This school has completed one more year. This year eight students were sent to appear in the VIIth Board Examination. Five students passed the Examination in first class, and three students succeeded in second class. This being the forth batch of students from the School appearing in the VIIth Board Examination, so far. It is creditworthy for the School to state that so far, since inception, all the students who appeared in the VIIth Board Examinations have passed and also are continuing their studies in High Schools. The GVS Upper Primary School is run with an aim to create each student into a disciplined and responsible citizen of the Nation. To fulfill this aim, the School ensures the participation of each student in various extra-curricular activities, such as, maintaining garden in the school premises. Participating in the cleanliness programs

of the surrounding villages. To inculcate sporting spirit, each student is encouraged to participate in various sports. The school ensures provision of the required facilities for the sports activities. As a part of moral education, recitation of Slokas from the Bhagvad Gita, reading the teachings from the scriptures of all religions and the speeches of our great leaders, and singing of patriotic songs, form a part of the daily prayers. On 10th March 2006, the MRO visited the school. He was very much impressed by the recitation of the Bhagvad Gita slokas by the school students. He suggested that the slokas of other scriptures also might be taught. The school assures him that his suggestion will be implemented.

GVS School is a totally free school. The student’s school dresses; books, sports materials, and stationary items etc. are all supplied to the students, free of cost. No fees or any other collection under any other collection under any other head is done from the students. The parents’ sole responsibility is to send their wards to the school. This school proudly claims that there are no dropouts from its students. This is the school, which discourages the very small children from far away villages, though they are willing to be sent to the school.

Despite the above bright scenario, the not so rosy picture is the depleting quantum of donations coming in, with possibilities of difficulty in sustaining the totally free structure of the school. Hence, it is being proposed tat a part of the above load may be borne by the not so poor parents. A good drinking water source is a problem in the school’s surroundings. During 2004 elections politicians came, promised a Bore Well for the area; won the elections and then

Forgot their promise. This necessity for a source for drinking water has also been conveyed to the members of the Tattabanda Panchayati.

3.Self-Helf Groups (SHGs)

As has been the policy from the beginning, GVS continues to play an advisory role only, in the activities of the SHGs. As on 31st March 2007, the following are the particulars of the SHGs working in the villages where GVS is active.

- Nos of SHGs------78

- Nos of members------1123

- Deposits (Thrift)------Rs.17, 47,180/-

- Revolving loans (from thrift)------Rs.13, 55,980/-

In the undertaken of Income Generating Schemes, the Kasireddipalem and Kovilapalem villages have been more progressive. In these villages, three SHGs joined together to start a Mini Dairy. For this the DRDA gave a loan of Rs.2, 00,000/-. GVS sincerely hopes that this example will stand the test of time, and the participating SHG members will reap the desired financial benefits, and also that spurred by their progress the other SHGs also will dare and come forward to emulate this example…
