Course 2, Chapter 2
Lesson 1 Investigation 2.1.1
Objectives:
To continue a block pattern given the first three stages
Materials
2cm cubes (70 per group)
Master 5, 7,8
Mini Lesson 10 minutes
Have large objects which feature patterns eg wall paper, fabric
Discuss patterns and the essential element of predictability
Use the Overhead projector to build the first three stages of a block pattern
Independent/small group work 20 minutes
Have students make their own first 3 stages - page 78 Explore, dot points 1 and 2.
Continue together with page 78 Explore dot points 3,4,5,6.
Small groups page 79 Problem Set A Numbers 3,4.
Use Chapter 2 Activity Sheet 1.

Objectives:
To examine structures from different perspectives and check understanding.
Materials
blocks
Cubes for each group
Master 7, 8
OHT of Master 8
Mini Lesson 10 minutes
On the OHP build the double staircase p80. Discuss top-count view. On OHT of Master 8 record number of blocks in each stack.

Investigation 2.1.3
Objectives:
To examine how the square pattern and the double staircase pattern grow the same way numerically, Stress that stacks must grow predictably.
Materials
blocks
Cubes for each group
Master 7, 8
OHT of Master 8
Mini Lesson 10 minutes
On the OHP build the block pattern as in cartoon. Then start with a stack and demonstrate removing block in a systematic way. See Additional Examples on T83. Ensure students appreciate the predictability of the removal
