1. General Information

Selection into the WAIS Women’s Gymnastics program will be based on the criteria outlined below.Prioritisation may occur due to the size of the squad and the number of eligible athletes.

  1. Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for selection, gymnasts must:

  • Reside in Western Australia,
  • Be a current registered member of a Gymnastics WA affiliated gymnastics club,
  • Meet the selection criteria (see below),
  • Have qualified at a minimum of International Level (IL) 8.
  1. Selection Panel

The Selection Panel will consist of:

  • WAIS Women’s Gymnastics Program Head Coach
  • WAIS Performance Team Director
  • Gymnastics Australia (GA) representative
  • Gymnastics Western Australia (GWA) representative
  • WAIS Women’s Gymnastics Program Coordinator
  1. Selection Criteria

The following factors will be considered as part of the selection process:

  1. PERFORMANCE
  • IDEAL skills testing results (score and national ranking)
  • Performance at National and/or Benchmark events
  • Competition level for age
  1. POTENTIAL TO PROGRESS

2.1Physical

  • Physical and flexibility testing results
  • Body composition as per identified range
  • Physical resilience

2.2Technical

  • Rate of skill learning
  • ‘D Score’ prognostic

2.3Psychological

  • “Coachability” (communication, openness)
  • Engagement with training (commitment to plan, vigour, dedication, self discipline, flexibility)
  • Management of the performance environment (competitiveness, ability to execute mental skills)
  • Mental skills (attention & emotional control, goal setting, decision making)

2.4External

  • Manages university, school or work without compromising training and/or performance
  • Is proactive in providing timely communication of training, camp and competition plans to the educational institution and/or work place to ensure neither external or training commitments are compromised
  • High level of communication between coach, gymnast, family and program
  1. PERSONAL EXCELLENCE
  • Athletes will be required to demonstrate a high level of commitment to training and competition programs
  • In addition, athlete behaviour is expected to reflect the requirements of a high performance program, including
  • Exemplary discipline
  • A positive approach towards improvement
  • Respect for coaches, athletes and the program in general

Notes:

The Selection panel may add athletes outside these criteria where special circumstances apply. Consideration of “Potential to Progress” and “Personal Excellence” factors detailed above will be taken into account

  1. Appeals:

If an athlete wishes to lodge an appeal about the selection process, this appeal is to be submitted in writing to the Performance Team Director. Appeals are to be reviewed by the Selection Panel who will investigate the selection process and substantiate the outcome. The athlete is to be advised of the outcome of the appeal in writing

In the event that the athlete is unsatisfied with the outcome of an appeal, the appeal can be escalated by the athlete to the Executive Director, in writing.

  1. WAIS WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS PROGRAM ATHLETE TERMS & CONDITIONS

6.1 The High Performance Environment of the WAIS Women’s Gymnastics Program:

  • The purpose is to create an environment that enables identified gymnasts to maximise their performance potential
  • The environment is built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect - all gymnasts, coaches, management, support staff and administration
  • WAIS will provide individual standards annually so that staff & athletes know and understand all expectations required of them in their commitment to this environment
  • Each gymnast must be accountable for achieving their own goals
  • Monthly evaluation meetings are held among the Performance Enhancement team – any athletes consistently not achieving at the required level will be notified
  • All gymnasts must agree to abide by the terms, conditions, protocols & procedures of the Fliers gymnastics program

6.2 Key Performance Indicators of WAIS Women’s Gymnasts:

  • Must attend bi-annual meetings with the coach outside of regular training hours
  • Improvement in skills, training and performance
  • Full attendance at training, camps and competitions identified in the Performance Plan
  • Timely compliance with requests of service providers, including booking and attending appointments as necessary
  • Demonstrate a willingness to be the “best you can be” at all times
