TO: ALL PROSPECTIVE GBS HOCKEY PLAYERS
RE: Announcement—Summer Strength & Conditioning Program
We have an exciting announcement to make about a new strength and conditioning program Coach Philbin and GBS Hockey are implementing for the Summer off-season. The team has arranged with highly regarded personal trainer Adam Smiley (bio below) to develop and manage a fitness program specifically for hockey players. The program is open exclusively to prospective hockey players who will attend GBS next year (regardless of whether they played for GBS in 2017), and it is strongly recommended. The 8-week program will feature the following sessions every week:
1. A 1.5-hour strength training session with Smiley and another trainer at the Park Center.
o This will be hockey-specific training with isometrics, weights and equipment (e.g., kettlebells, TRX, slide boards, bands, etc.) to build muscular strength and improve flexibility.
o The group will be split between Tuesdays or Thursdays at 8 p.m.
o An additional trainer will be added if either group exceeds ten kids.
2. A second (on your own) strength training session at the Park Center.
o The Park Center will provide each player with eight free passes to use any time during the 8-week period (an $80 value).
o Total cost for strength training will be $240. Registration will occur through the Park Center website, with details to follow.
3. A separate aerobic/endurance training session on Wednesday nights.
o These sessions will focus on aerobic conditioning through distance, speed and agility training, including group distance runs; repetitive middle-distance circuits; “hills” or “stadiums,” and off-road or obstacle courses.
o Aerobic benchmark testing (e.g., a timed mile run) will be conducted at the beginning and end of the 8 weeks, with scores reported to the coaching staff.
o These sessions can be paid for “a la carte” (on-site) at a cost of $20/session.
4. On your own aerobic training.
o Each player will be expected to engage in at least one other session of aerobic training during the week, e.g., jogging, cycling, rollerblading, playing soccer, etc.
The program will run from Tuesday, June 20 through Thursday, August 10. Coach Philbin’s J&J camp will be held the week of August 14, and tryouts will be held August 19–21. From the coaching staff, to the Board, to the returning upperclassmen, the GBS Hockey Program is committed to ensuring that everyone interested in playing GBS Hockey next year arrives at tryouts in peak physical condition.
Thank you,
Coach Philbin and the GBS Hockey Board
