  1. Put a page break at the end of the last appendix.
  • Click at the end of the appendix.
  • Go to Page Layout: Breaks: Section Breaks: Next Page.
  1. After that page break, on the blank page, add a header that says Endnotes in the heading 1 style.
  2. Add a second header that says References in the heading 1 style.
  1. Click before the R at the beginning of References and add a next-page section break.
  • Go to Page Layout: Breaks: Section Breaks: Next Page.
  • Double check that the margins are 1.5 inches left and right for the entire document:

— Go to Page Layout: Margins

— Pull down to Custom margins

— At the bottom under Apply to, change This section to Whole document.

  1. Then prepare endnotes.
  • Click in the text of the Endnotes header, before the next-page section break.
  • Click on References tab.
  • In the footnotes pane, click on the little arrow in the bottom right corner.
  • Under Location, choose Endnotes button and
change drop-down menu to End of section.
  • Change the number format to Arabic (1, 2, 3).
  • Apply changes to this section.
  • Click Apply.
  1. Go through each previoussection of the report to suppress endnotes everywhere but the last two sections. The section that ends with the Endnotes heading should not have its Endnotes suppressed. The report will have more than one section if it has landscaped pages.
To move easily from section to section, hold down the control key and type G. Select section and put in -1 to go to previous section and +1 to go to next section.

To suppress endnotes:

  • Click in a section.
  • Go to Page Layout: Margins
  • Pull down to Custom margins
  • Click on Layout tab
  • Check suppress endnotes.
  • Repeat for every section except for the last one that starts with the continuous section break after the endnotes header.
  1. Then insert an endnote.
  • References: Insert Endnote.[2]
  1. Get rid of the Endnote separator line between the endnote header and the first note.
  • Go to View: Draft.
  • Go to References: Show Notes.
  • In the drop-down menu in the notes pane, select Endnote Separator.
  • Select the line and delete.
  • Select the return (which might be invisible, to see it, click on the paragraph symbol in the Home ribbon), and shrink it to 5 point.
  • To go back to page layout, go to View: Print Layout.

Then the references can be added after the endnotes. The bibliography can be inserted after the references heading.

Landscaped page inserted to demonstrate need for suppressing endnotes in every section but the last

Let’s try putting an endnote here now that the footer on this page is not the same as previous.[3]

Text for Appendix A. I’m going to experiment with putting a next-page section break at the end of the last appendix, before the endnotes. Here is an endnote in the appendix.[4]
