Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a program offered to students who have demonstrated a high level of financial need as determined by the results of theirFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must meet the awarding criteria and request FWS on their FAFSA in order to be offered FWS.
How it Works
FWS eligibility can make it easier for students to secure part-time job opportunities on campus. Students work to earn a regular bi-weekly pay check, which they can use to make payments on school loans or to meet some of their day-to-day expenses. The FWS allotment (usually $2,500 for the academic year) makes up a portion of the students total financial aid eligibility by reducing loan eligibility, thus helping reduce loan debt. Students can earn up to the offered FWS amount.
ü The administration of work-study jobs is an online process through a partnership with the Polar Careers office, the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Human Resources.

Tips for Landing a Work Study Job
· Seek jobs:
ü First week of each semester, and
ü The 8th or 9th week of each subsequent semester.
ü Before leaving at the end of spring semester (for fall jobs).
· Call ahead to determine who manages the work-study hiring. Ask to meet w/ that person.
· Dress up…nice school clothes.
· Provide a copy of your completed Student Employment Application.
· Provide a Work Availability Schedule (see attached example).
ü TIP: Lunch hours are some of the more difficult hours for staff to cover. If you can be available during the lunch hour (11a-1p), that may sometimes get you hired.
· HINT:
ü The Student Affairs Division typically hires student staff late fall semester for the next academic year. The department hiring the most students is the Office of Residence Life. Spend time with your hall staff this fall semester to see if this is a job that would interest you.
ü Other Student Affairs offices also hire some staff. For a list of offices, see: http://www.onu.edu/administration/office_of_student_affairs
