State Horse Show

Although the fall seems a long way off, it is time to begin the selection process for 4-H members who will be attending the Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show, September 10th and 11th, 2016at the Three-County Fairgrounds in Northampton.

While the delegate selection process varies from county to county; the first page of the application is required. The subsequent pages, as well as a written test, interview, or other appropriate method may be used by counties in the selection process. Each county is allowed 15 horse exhibitors and a list of up to 10 alternates that are prioritized. Any eligible and approved delegate applying for the Horse Lover or Model Horse Show, etc. will be allowed to attend. Attached to this email are:

  1. The application for selection for the Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show.
  2. The preliminary entry spreadsheet.

The application should be copied and sent out or emailed to all enrolled horse and horse-lover project members in your county. This application will also be available on the Massachusetts 4-H Horse Program website under Upcoming 4-H Horse Shows and Events.

The preliminary entry spreadsheet should be completed by the designated county representative/educator and emailed to the Massachusetts 4-H Equine Science Coordinator, Meagan Welch Coyne at by July 15, 2016.

The following is a time line for the selection process:

By June15th-Applications should have been distribute to all horse leaders and members.

By July 15th–all preliminary entry spreadsheets should be completed and sent to the Massachusetts 4-H Equine Science Coordinator.

By July 22nd – Show prize list and entry book should have been distributed to all delegates, county representatives/educators, and 4-H offices.

By August7th–all exhibitors should have completed all entry paperwork and sent with payment to their county’s representative/educator.

By August 15th-Designated county representatives/educators must fill out the 2016 entry form spreadsheet (with delegates name, phone, horse’s name, etc) for all delegates and alternates that have been approved for the Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show and submit it electronically toshow secretary and Meagan Welch Coyne at . Please be sure to include all horse lover and drill team delegates.

Also, print out a copy of the spreadsheet and mail it, along with your county’s paperwork (including all completed forms and checks for each delegate and alternate), to:

All packets MUST BE POSTMARKED BY AUGUST 15th.This is a firm deadline and entries will not be accepted after this date.

This packet has been sent to each 4-H office and to the county representatives/educatorsand will also be available on the Massachusetts 4-H Horse Program website under Upcoming 4-H Horse Shows and Events. 4-H Extension Staff and county representatives should be in communication with each other to be sure the above time-line is met. Horses used in the MA 4-H Horse Show must be owned or leased as the delegate’s 4-H horse management project since June 1st of the year attending the show. Exhibitors may enter one or two divisions per day (not to exceed 10 performance classes per horse/per day) and may request to bring a second horse if space allows.

The horse lover division is a unique way for youth to lend a hand in the daily running of the show. Horse lovers do not bring a horse to the show.

All drill team exhibitors NOT COMPETING in the horse show will be required to complete all necessary paperwork in order to participate at the MA State 4-H Horse Show.

Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show Application 2016

This application may be used by counties for the selection process to attend the Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show. All members must submit page 1 or they will not be eligible for consideration.

All applicants for the Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show must be at least 8 years of age as of January 1stand have not reached their 19th birthday as of January 1st of the current 4-H year and must be 4-H members in good standing. Walk-Trot applicants who become Walk-Trot-Canter exhibitors after the entry form is submitted for the State Show become ineligible to show at the 2016 Massachusetts State 4-H Horse Show. All applicant must be a member in good standing, or they will not be considered for review.

Members in good standing MUST have completed the following:

  • Attended at least 75% of their club meetings since October of 2015.
  • Horse exhibitors must participate in 4-H Fitting and Showmanship at least once since July 2015. This may be accomplished at the club level, a clinic, or a horse show.
