APK / Questioning – who was country’s first president – Teacher will lead a Q and A about America’s first president and discuss the government before the Constitution
TIP / Read neither fit for war or peace – In small groups students will read “neither fit for war or peace” and discuss the discussion questions from the smartboard

Equal voting activity – Students will see how one state one vote can be unfair by being divided into small groups and voting with each group getting one vote, no matter the size of the group.

Tuesday / 11-73.2 – Constitutional Convention – 3/5s Compromise – Key figures 3.2 – Constitutional Convention – Virginia Plan, New Jersey Plan, Great Compromise – Key figuresOBJ / Describe the Constitutional Convention and the plans that led to the Great Compromise and the 3/5ths Compromise
APK / Students will read the letter from James Madison and be introduced to the Constitutional Simulation Activity
TIP / The teacher will lead a discussion about the Constitutional Convention simulation. Students will divided up into states to represent one of the original states at the convention. They will then research what that state wanted in terms of population and slavery using the handout provided by the teacher. The class will hold a “convention” in which each state will speak about what they want.
The teacher will then lead a lecture with the students taking Cornell notes about the Virginia/New Jersey plans, the Great Compromise, the 3/5ths Compromise and key figures from the convention.

Teacher will then lead a lecture about the Principles of the Constitution with the Students taking Cornell notes.
Students will pair share practice the principles of Popular Sovereignty and Consent of the Governed. Also they will pair share practice the Virginia Plan, New Jersey Plan, Great Compromise, and 3/5ths Compromise.

Thursday / 11-93.4 Constitutional principles – Seperation of Powers- Checks and Balances
3.4 Consitutional Powers – Judicial Review
OBJ / Analyze the 3 branches of government, checks and balances, and judicial review
APK / Rope on the floor raised by three branches activity – Teacher will lay a chord/rope on the floor with 4 signs on the floor depicting the difficulties faced by America coming out of the American Revolution/ Articles of Confederation. 3 students will “raise” the rope out of the problems, those three students representing the 3 branches of government.
TIP / The Teacher will lead a lecture about the three branches of government with each of the three student from the rope activity holding a sign about one of the three branches of the government.
Students will fill out a graphic organizer about the 3 branches and their impact on each other.
Mock law making activity – In 4 groups the students will be given the responsibility of creating a law. Each group will be given a paper which has their groups’ directions. After the students have had the opportunity to carrying out their jobs, the teacher will lead a class discussion on the process that the students went through including all 3 branches, how they check and balanced each other and the use of Judicial Review.

Friday / 11-103.4 Constitutional Principles – Federalism
OBJ / Analyze Federalism
APK / In school federalism discussion – Teacher will lead a discussion about the level structure of the school including the District wide, building wide, and classroom levels. Students will discuss how the three levels of the school have some different responsibilities and some that are the same.
TIP / Teacher will lead a lecture with the students taking notes about Federalism.
Students will then work in small groups on a paper that discusses Federalism and gives examples of Federalism.
The teacher will lead a class discussion with the students making a list of different current events and determine whether they are local, state, or Federal issues in Federalism

Monday / 11-133.5 Bill of Rights
OBJ / Develop an understanding of the Bill of Rights and its application
APK / Teacher will play the “Bill of Rights” song for the students. The Students will be given a lyric sheet so they can follow along. After the Teacher will lead a Q and A about the different rights mentioned in the song.
TIP / Fast Forward / Rewind Activity – Students will be given a paper to work on in small groups which depicts a scenario in the future and students have to determine what rights they should have and why.
Read Bill of Rights, discuss and paraphrase – Students will read the Bill of Rights as a class with volunteers reading. The teacher will lead an explanation of each right. Students will then be taught a mnemonic device for remembering the Bill of Rights and have to write the Bill of Rights in their own words.

TIP / We will finish the reading from the day before and students will finish writing the Bill of Rights in their own words.
We will begin our multi day project over the Bill of Rights. Students will be given a list of Bill of Rights issues from which to choose. Each student will be required to research using a cpu in the lab or the ipads in the classroom and then write a 5 paragraph essay about their topic which explains the entire argument but also is argumentative for one side supported by facts and details.
