Message fromBarney Swan

[Barney Swan]

Good day. This is Barney Swan here, and super, super exciting news. We have reunited with the Last Degree team. It’s just beyond fantastic to be here with everyone. It is a huge, huge moment for Dad and I to be out here together and to be reunited on this special evening tonight.

32 years ago, my father, Roger and Gareth marched into the South Pole after their unassisted 70-day expedition, The Footsteps of Scott, which did not have a radio or a GPS or anything like that. They navigated with the sun, a sextant and a watch. An amazing journey. Sharing this anniversary with him out here is just beyond special.

I think the South Pole really is the beginning of a lot of things, not the… not the end.

[Robert Swan]

And I’d like to pass respect, and send my very best wishes to Roger Mear and Gareth Wood, without whom I would have never reached the South Pole – because it is exactly, almost to the hour, on January 11th 1986, 32 years ago…

[Robert Swan]

We reached the South Geographic Pole. More people had stood on the moon than walked to the pole in those days. So we’re a happy team today. So this is Rob, on behalf of everybody
