The Future of Fleet / The Changing Face of the Fleet Industry
[John Kendall]
Editor, International Fleet World
[John Kendall]
I think we’re going to see some very big changes in the fleet industry in the coming five years, as there are more things like apps to help people plan, more integration with, for instance, fuel car providers and with what are, if you like, telematics providers. More information available to people, so they’ll be able to make faster decisions about what’s the best way to get from A to B.

I think the real challenge is in mobility and therefore in transportation will be access to energy, and what will provide energy which is also affordable. Total cost of ownership, the ecological challenges – CO2 emissions, air pollutants and noise emissions –a change in demands in mobility. The next one is huge technology trends in hardware, I mean in vehicles, so we’ve lived with these two fuel types and two engine types for a hundred years. Nowadays we have a huge issue or opportunity to offer different engine types, but also on the fuel side, we have by far more than gasoline and diesel. So, overall I think it’s a great exciting time in mobility and transportation but the world of transportation, I promise you, will change dramatically.

I think it’s an exciting time in the mobility space and especially in the lives of fleet managers. The combination of data and connectivity, together with electrification and other cleaner sources of fuel actually means that the professional usage of the road will only rise, so we’ll see more fleets and we’ll see a more important role for fleet managers in optimising these transport systems.

The world believes electric mobility will be the one and only solution. I promise you it will have its space, but it will make sense only under certain circumstances and certain segments.

Sothe name of the game forthe diesel is stay as good as it is with efficiency, the miles per gallon, but we need to clean up the diesel engine heavily regarding emissions.
[John Kendall]
I think the top issues of concern for fleet managers at the moment will be the different options there are. I mean they’ve traditionally bought diesel cars but there are other options available as well now, and again, it’s got to depend on where the vehicle is being used, how it’s being used.
