TodaythegardenisareflectionofGeorgeandRuthTindale’svisionofhavingagardendisplayingsomethingofinterestallyearround.Thegardencontainsanumberofplantsrarelyfoundincultivationwhicharethrivingintheacidicsoils,cooltemperateclimateandshadedconditionsfoundintheDandenongRanges.Extensivecollectionsofmagnolias,rhododendrons,camellias,azaleas,fuchsias,bulbsandhydrangeaswillbeeasilyrecognisabletothegardenenthusiast.

History

1893-CaptainJPallantpurchasedthe10acreproperty,clearingandbuildingahouseforhisfamily.ThePropertywasnamed‘Pallant’sHill’.

1915-MrHRHarperpurchasedthepropertyasaweekendretreat.HeestablishedanEnglishstylegardenandcreatedwhatisnowknownasHarper’sDrive.

1939-MrandMrsHPotterpurchasedthepropertyforaweekendretreat.Improvementsweremadetothehouseandgardenincludingafewpathsandtwowatertanks.

1958-GeorgeTindale,aresearchscientistwiththeVictorianDepartmentofAgriculture,purchasedthepropertyandbegandevelopingandextendingthegarden.Heandhiswife

Ruthcreatedtheplantingswhichyouseetoday.Bothweremembersofvarioushorticulturalsocietiesandmanyplantswereraisedfromseedmadeavailablefromthesocieties.

Otherrareorchoiceplantsweresourcedfromlocalnurseriesorplantcollectors.

1980-RuthTindalehandedthegardentotheVictorianConservationTrustinmemoryofherhusbandwhowishedthegardentobepreserved.

1995-ParksVictoriacommencedmanagementofTindaleGardenwhenitassumedmanagementofsixgardenpropertiesintheDandenongRangesincludingtheNationalRhododendronGardens,AlfredNicholasGardens,PiriandaGardens,RJHamerAboretum,MtDandenongArboretumandWilliamRickettsSanctuary.

Whattoseeanddo

InordertomanagetreeriskissueswiththeMountainAshforest,ParksVictoriahascurrentlyrestrictedaccesstosomepartsofthegarden.Howevertherearestillmanyareasoninterestincluding:

•Thenationallyregisteredhydrangeacollectionofcommonandunusualshrubs,climbersandtreelikespecies.

•Thesculpturesonpermanentdisplayinthegarden,ofwhichtwopiecesaretheworkofRuthTindale.

•TheMaturecanopyoftreesincludingthenativeMountainAsh(Eucalyptusregnans)andtheMonkeyPuzzle(Araucariaaraucana)onthefrontlawnarecomplimentedbydetailedplantings.

Seasonalhighlights

Springburstsforthwithamyriadofflowersfromrhododendrons,azaleas,magnolias,camelliaswhilstthefloweringbulbsintherockgardenarenottobemissed.

Summeriscooling,withthemarvellouscollectionofhydrangeasshowingofftheirmanyshadesofblue.Lilliums,fuchsiasandsummerfloweringperennialsareacolourfuldelightbeneaththeshadycanopyofMountainAsh.

Autumnshocksthesenseswithgold,red,orangeandburgundyfoliageonthemanymaturetrees.Nerines,Autumncrocusandotherbulbswillremindyouthatspringisnottheonlyseasonforbulbs.

WinterwillquietlyexposetheflowersoftheLentenRoseorHelleborebeneathotherwinterfloweringshrubs.
