FROM THE KITCHEN OF…

Rain Kemperman

Salad on a Stick with Honey Mustard-Yogurt Dressing

This is a really simple and fun recipe (from the outdoor kitchen of Kamp Kemperman)…& it looks cool, too! (This one was written FOR kids!!!!)

Salad

For each serving use:

- ½ cup fresh vegetables cut into 1-inch chunks, such as bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, cherry or grape tomatoes, celery radishes, mushrooms, etc.

- 2-3 leaf lettuce, baby romaine or spinach leaves

- 1 ½ ounces low-fat Cheddar cheese cut into cubes

- 1 wooden skewer

Honey Mustard-Yogurt Dressing

1 cup plain, fat-free or low-fat yogurt

3 tablespoons sweet honey, deli-style mustard

2 teaspoons honey

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon sugar

Wash hands

Wash vegetables, pat dry with a clean paper towel and cut into 1-inch chunks

Prepare dressing by mixing all ingredients in a bowl. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Ribbon lettuce or spinach around the vegetables and cheese cubes and alternate them on the skewer.

Dip & enjoy! (Makes 8 servings of dressing)

Curbside Recycling Comes to SSNA!!!

November was the first month that the curbside recycling took place for our neighborhood (including Shawnee Shoals, Shawnee View, Shawnee Shores, Iyopawa Island and Iyopawa Island Road). Recyclables are picked up by Republic Waste Services on the 1st Monday of each month (so put out with garbage on Sunday evening).

So far, we are below the minimum number of full time participants of 50; however, Republic is allowing us to participate until November 2009. So sign up today so we can keep the great service in our area! Call Republic at 877-268-3867 to sign up or request an additional bin.

Republic Services will accept nearly anything that is recyclable as long as it is clean (no food waste).

Acceptable items and recycle info:

-No need to sort (just throw it in the bin)

-They accept overflow in brown paper bags or cardboard boxes (or you can call to get an additional bin)

-Newspaper, including inserts & comics

-Flyers, magazines, catalogs, phone books

-Office paper, junk mail, maps, post-it notes

-Cereal boxes, cardboard boxes, brown paper bags

-Clear, green, brown jars and bottles (remove lids)

-Food cans, foil, pie tins, lids from jars

-Plastic containers with #1 or #2 symbol on the bottom (no bottle caps)

Unacceptable items:

-Plastic grocery bags or wrap, food wrappers, waxed or laminated paper

-Styrofoam or microwave containers

-Materials not rinsed & clean

-Scrap Metal

-Window Glass

-Wire hangers

-Batteries

-Motor oil or motor oil containers

-Aerosol cans

-Juice or milk cartons

-Drinking glasses

-Plastic knives, forks & Spoons

-Lights bulbs

-Paper clips/metal fasteners

-Pizza Boxes

-Facial Tissues

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Other Items)

What can you do with those “unacceptable” items that Republic Waste Services cannot take in the curbside bins? Here is a list of a few. If you think of more, please notify me and we’ll add to the list (Tammy, 238-2182 or OR Rain, 238-5392 or ).

Plastic Bottle Caps (from water bottle, juice or milk jugs, etc.): Panache Salon, 200 Hoosier Dr, #A, Angola, IN (260-665-2674).

Antifreeze and Oil: Coldwater Waste Treatment Plant on Jay Street. Local dealerships and garages often will accept a few quarts of used motor oil.

Plastic Grocery Bags: Bins at some of the area stores (including Kroger and WalMart). Also, make good collection bags for walking dogs!

Styrofoam: The local UPS store is always willing to take these off your hands.

Batteries: Collection bin at the back door of Culy’s Jewelers in downtown Coldwater. (Also, in the recycling area near Rural King in Angola.)

Cell Phones: Several local charities accept used cell phones and get them to folks in need (e.g., domestic assault shelters, soldiers, elderly). Check with your local service provider or agent.

Computers: ALWAYS be sure your hard drive is cleared first!!! Many local PC repair shops can clear your drive and then rebuild your computer in order to provide one to someone in need at a reasonable cost.
