LIQUI MOLY hosted Legend Car Race – more than R100,000 collected to support JAM

December2012 – German Oil Manufacturer LIQUI MOLY joined forces with Legend Car Racing South Africa to create a unique and exciting event to help raise funds for JAM (Joint Aid Management - a non-profit, Christian humanitarian relief and development organization).

When Kevin Hepburn brought Legend Car Racing to South Africa in 2010 he had a vision: The introduction of an affordable single-seater race car that is very quick while being very affordable.Running a similar format to the International “Race of Champions”, this event offered great spectator value as two identical cars raced each other heads-up. The concept is straightforward: The first car to cross the line is the winner.

Celebrities Nicholis Louw, Pieter Koen, Sureshnie Rider, ChiliBoy Ralepelle and Pro Driver Genarro Bonafede entertained the crowd, by racing each other in the POG Buggies before the main event.

The Legend Cars (Mouse cars as Jaki Scheckter calls it) with their 4 stroke 1300 Yamaha engines had the crowds on their feet for the 30th time as the final showdown was between Gary Formato of team Sinadad Racing and Roelf du Plessis of Team Worldnet Logistics who battled it out for a first ever Race of Legends Crown.

Formato and du Plessis crossed the finish line at exactly the same time and it was impossible to determine a clear winner. The organisers decided to re-run the final heat to determine who the legend of the Legends actually was.Formato clearly meant business from the word go as he served his notice to the rest of the field when he put on a spectacular performance, beating racing sensation Jaki Scheckter in the elimination rounds. Even though Du Plessis looked like the favorite (he was said to be the “winner” on the first “final” round), it was Formato that drove like a mad-man for the umpteenth time that night and crossed the line first, making him the first ever Race of Legends Champion.

Even though the ultimate goal of the event was to crown a Champion, the rest of the race event was by no means boring. On the contrary, the event saw a couple of big names battling it out to the last few rounds. The young rally star, Guy Botterill (Team Strategix), gave a sensational performance to win against ex-South African motor racing champion, stunt driver and trainer Robbi Smith (Team LIQUI MOLY). Legendary Ian Schecter also fell short in a remarkable display of skill against Stuart Grant (Team Sinadad). Our very own carting queen, the 18 year old Naomi Schiff, proved that she is much more than just a pretty face, beating Corrie Taljaard to second place in group A. The day presented many champions young and old(er) such as Evan Hutchison (S.A. off-road champion), Ben Morgenrood (multiple national Group N and V8 champion), Franco di Matteo, Devin Richardson (National production car driver for Big Boss Auto clinic) - just to name a few.

Unfortunately the event fell on a Friday, and on the misconception that the race would end by the end of business, the crowds were nowhere near the expectations. However, LIQUI MOLY was able to raise R101,861.15 for JAM. This will enable this organisation to feed another 282 children for a year.

Spectators also had the opportunity of taking part in the action, by betting on their favorite team, giving them a chance to walk away with R10,000, should their ticket be drawn from the winning team’s box. Jody Morrison and Sacha Ristic did just that and the couple walked away with a very nice early Christmas present.

LIQUI MOLY would like to thank all its partners, Worldnet Logistics, Strategix, Sa Customs/Aline, Falken, Motorite, Autozone/Gabriel, Sinadad, The TrucK MAN, who supported this great cause and everyone involved with the preparations.
