The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, through the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan, has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.

Featuring Dan Reed, MA, LPC, Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)

This 2-day training will cover 5 training modules (The Foundation of MI, Resistance Examined, Client Centered Interviewing Skills, Recognizing Change Talk & Eliciting Change Talk). Training participants will learn the origins of Motivational Interviewing and its development as an evidence-based method. The participant will also learn the three structural elements used for learning Motivational Interviewing (Spirit, Principles, and Techniques).

Participants will be able to: 1. Explain the concept of rolling with resistance; 2. Describe an understanding of the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing; 3. Identify ambivalence and use it to develop discrepancy; 4. Recognize change talk in session with a client; 5. Identify eight methods for eliciting change talk; 6. Identify four techniques for eliciting change talk; and 7. Describe an understanding of the stages of change and how MI fits within that framework. Both days of training will incorporate lecture, skills practice using various breakout activities, role play, real play (actual de-identified case samples) and evocative exercises.

About the presenter: Dan Reed had over 25 years of experience working in Human Services. He held both direct service and supervisory positions with a primary focus in children and family services in a CMH setting. Dan completed the Motivational Interviewing Train the Trainer – Wyoming Protocol training initiative in the State of Michigan in 2010 and became a Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2014. Dan has provided MI Basic Training in multiple Behavioral and Physical Health setting in the State of Michigan and Nationally. Dan is best known for being very passionate about Motivational Interviewing and how it is helpful for both the client and provider. He offers a mix of lecture, interactive exercises, personal examples, videos, breaks, answering questions and humor that makes for an enjoyable and highly educational experience.

Continuing Education: The Community Mental Health Association of Michigan is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) to sponsor educational training for professional certification. Attendees are required to take the 2-day Motivational Interviewing Basic Skills Training prior to attending Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills Training. Advanced MI training is intended for Clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, supports coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, and any other practitioners at the intermediate or advanced level of practice.

Advanced Motivational Interviewing is designed for individuals who have completed a basic introduction to Motivational Interviewing. Briefly reviewed are the historical/theoretical foundation, style, and spirit of Motivational Interviewing applied to co-occurring, integrated healthcare. Advanced MI skills will include; complex reflections, co-constructing a narrative, intentional interview direction, ethics of Motivational Interviewing, and strategies specific to the four processes of Motivational Interviewing.

Participants will be able to: Participants will be able to: 1. understand theoretical foundation and evidenced based support of MI and develop a personal working definition of MI. 2. Identify what is and what is not MI and identify professional helping skills that directly correlate with healthy behavior change. 3. Experience demonstrations of MI style, spirit, and skill sets. 4. Practice MI style, spirit, and skill sets. 5. Demonstrate active listening skills. 6. Identify challenges applying MI and other strength-based strategies and develop a plan to sustain evidenced based practices that support healthy behavior change and improved quality of life for people served.

About presenter:Randall (Randy) Estes is a licensed master social worker, certified advanced addiction counselor and certified clinical supervisor currently providing mental health and substance abuse therapy at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Kalamazoo, MI. He joined the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2010. Providing Motivational Interviewing Training on a National, State, and local level since 2008, Randy is currently a contract Motivational Interviewing Trainer for the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHA) and the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI).

1-Day Motivational Interviewing for Supervisors: Helping Staff Meet Motivational Interviewing Competency with Coaching and Feedback

The training is intended for supervisors of contact level staff/practitioners such as case managers, supports coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, and Peer Support Specialist in the state of Michigan at the intermediate or advanced level of practice.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Supervisors provides supervisors multiple tools that they can use to help direct care staff meet basic competency in using Motivational Interviewing. The MI Consultation and Feedback Form is a useful tool in evaluating seven areas of competency. Supervisors will have a better understanding of the 4 Processes of MI.

Participants will be able to: 1. Identify several areas that staff tend to struggle with while use MI. 2. Supervisors will be able to strengthen their staff's ability to utilize the OARS and help them identify, respond, and strengthen change talk. 3. They will be able to give feedback to staff using a strengths-based approach, while honoring the Spirit of MI.

About the presenter:Michelle Boudreaux, LMSW, has been providing mental health and co-occurring services for over twenty-years. She started her career working in residential treatment with adolescents in their families. She has provided IDDT treatment and utilized Motivational Interviewing since 2005 and has provided DBT treatment since 2007. She was a program supervisor who has provided oversight to multiple evidence-based practices. (IDDT, MI, DBT, FPE, IPS, Recovery Illness and Management, Integrated Healthcare, etc.) for eleven years. She currently is a supervisor at InterAct of Michigan where she provides co-occurring and DBT services. She also serves on the MIFAST review team for DBT approach, while honoring the Spirit of MI.

Payment will be required prior to attendance. Payment methods available in advance and onsite: credit card, check or exact cash. If payment has not been received prior to the event, fees will be collected at registration the day of the event unless alternate arrangements are pre-approved by CMHAM. NOTE: Purchase orders are not considered payment. All no shows will be invoiced the full registration amount. All checks can be made out to CMHAM and sent to CMHAM, 426 S. Walnut, Lansing, MI 48933.

Certificate Awarded: At the conclusion of this seminar, bring your Certificate of Attendance form to the CMHAM Staff to be initialed. You will turn in the top, to be initialed by CMHAM staff.

Note:If you are over 5-minutes late or depart early, you forfeit your certificate of attendance for the entire training. Please note this is a rule that CMHAM must enforce or we could lose our ability to provide certificates in the future. This rule will be strictly followed.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the conference for a full refund less a $15 administrative fee. If cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the training, no refund will be given and the full charge will be incurred. Substitutions are permitted at any time.

Evaluation: There will be an opportunity for each participant to complete an evaluation of the course and the instructor.
