Physical Activity Counseling and Exercise Prescription in Health Care Workshop

This workshop will have in-depth coverage of the consequences of sedentary behavior, the benefits of improved fitness, motivational strategies to improve adherence, case studies, aerobic and resistance exercise prescription and how to handle co-morbidities and challenges in physical activity programming.

Overview:The Exercise Vital Sign (EVS) is the most important vital sign you need to monitor with the majority of patients seen in primary care today. Learn how to efficiently integrate the EVS into your daily practice and to provide exercise counseling and prescription for your patients to prevent, manage and treat chronic disease. This workshop will give you the confidence and skills to integrate physical activity counseling and exercise prescription into your daily practice.

This workshop is presented in 3 variations:

Section A:Physical Activity Counseling(morning session)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the health benefits and safety of regular physical activity with patients
  2. Use Physical activity as one of the vital signs when doing a clinical health evaluation of your patients
  3. Provide physical activity recommendations to patients as part of regular health care visits.
  4. Utilize motivational counseling to facilitate health behaviour change.
  5. Help patients overcome common barriers to physical activity or exercise participation

Total Learning Time = 3.75 hours including 31% of interactive learning. This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 7 Mainpro+ credits. This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. You may claim a maximum of 3.75 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

Section B: Exercise Prescription(afternoon session)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the health benefits and safety of regular exercise with patients
  2. Use the “Exercise vital sign” as a part of a clinical health assessment
  3. Provide basic exercise counseling and prescription to patients as part of health care visits
  4. Understand how to prescribe and monitor aerobic exercise and perform basic resistance exercises
  5. Modify exercise recommendations to address co-morbidities and common limitations

Total Learning Time = 3.75 hours including 38% of interactive learning. This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 7 Mainpro+ credits.This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. You may claim a maximum of 3.75 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

Sections A & B:Physical Activity Counseling and Exercise Prescription(full day)

Total Learning Time = 6.75 hours including 35% of interactive learning.This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 14 Mainpro+ credits.This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. You may claim a maximum of 6.75 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

Workshop Registration: Open to all health care professionals as well as students enrolled in health and exercise science programs.
