Dear Parents,

On Tuesday, October 20th, the 8th grade students will take their English classroom to Crescenta Valley Park for a morning filled with poetry, stories, and theater.

This will be the second “We appreciate our 8th Graders” event being organized in order to make the students’ last year a memorable one.

Participation in this event will be mandatory for all students and will be assessed as a project for their second quarter English Literature grade.

Students will have several options when deciding what piece of literature they will share with their classmates. First, they have the option of writing their own story/poem/skit, or they may choose an existing work (must be preapproved). The piece of work they choose to share may be presented individually, or with a group of 2-4 students. The skits that are chosen may be very short plays or scenes/acts pulled out of longer works (i.e. the last scene from Hamlet). There will be a maximum of four minutes allocated for each performance, so students must plan accordingly.

A selection of works will be made available in class for those students who have trouble selecting a piece.

Students must have their piece chosen by October 9th. The piece selected must be presented by this date for approval.

Poetry in the Park will begin early, so I ask that parents drop their children off at the park no later than 8am but no earlier than 7:35am.

Meeting point will be at the Crescenta Valley Park sign on the corner of New York and Honolulu. After the event, students will be transported back to school by teachers and administration (distance from park to school is approximately 1 mile). In order for a student to be driven back to school the attached permission slip must be signed. Without the permission slip, students will be asked to call their parents to return and drive them back to school.

In order to make this activity fun and successful, we will need contributions from our parents in the form of breakfast items. Since the event is early, hot chocolate, marshmallows, donuts, cheese & crackers, and croissants are on the menu. Also, we will need plates, napkins, and cups. If you can contribute to our event, please use the signupgenius.com link which will be emailed to the email address you have provided to the school. If a student does not want to eat any of the above mentioned items, they may bring a snack with them.

Also, students will be asked to bring a sleeping bag, blanket, or large beach towel to sit on during the readings. Since the event will be early and it will be chilly, please make sure the students are dressed appropriately.Required uniform for the event is Spirit Day attire as well as the 8th grade sweaters.

Thank you for all your help and cooperation.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Ms. Sarene
