This week’s game saw Enfield Grammar School take on Fortismere. This was only Grammar’s second game of the season and there were a couple of changes from the side that beat St Ignatius 3-2 just two weeks earlier. This week’s side was: Nick Lewesley (GK), Clinton Fubara and James Perry (CB), Richard Waller (LB),RaekwonNembhard, Jermaine Leatherdale (LM), Rico Giovanelli (RM), Jeffery Mensah and BenanGokcimen (CM), Mitchell Magona and Edwin Frimpong (CF). Subs: Sonny Stewart, EdizReyman, Matthew Paton and AyoEniolorunda.
Fortismere started the match with their kick off; however Enfield Grammar were straight in with lots of pressure on the players with the ball. It didn’t take long for Edwin to put the first one away, sending Grammar 1-0 up within the first ten minutes.
There wasn’t much waiting before goal number two came along, thanks to a beautiful cross by Rico left Benan with a side foot pass over the keeper from the edge of the 6 yard box.Fortismere kept pushing but with solid defending from James and Clinton, Nick rarely needed to touch the ball.
The third goal was by Rico who snuck behind the defence and received a great ball by Jeffery, Rico was one on one with the goalie and just side footed the ball into the bottom, right hand corner.Fortismere tried attacking down the wings but Raekwon and Richard kept them out.
For goal number four Benan played a through ball for Jermaine to run on to, leaving just the keeper to beat and Jermaine put it past him with ease. On the stroke of 35 minutes, Rico gained the ball and he charged down the wing as if nothing could stop him. However, just as Rico drew nearer the goal, the Fortismere centre back came across and knocked the ball out for a corner. Rico swung the ball into the box from the corner and it landed on the foot of James Perry who just directed it into the top left hand corner sending Enfield Grammar into the half time break 5-0 up.
At half time, everyone was extremely hot, as the temperature reached 25 degrees. Substitutions were made at half time: Jeffery and Clinton came off, as they both had a rugby cup match on Wednesday, and made way for Matthew and Sonny. Also Jermaine came off, allowing Ayo to go on, on the left of midfield. Mr Duce gave a good team talk saying how everyone was playing well and that they should keep it up. Just before the start of the second half some of the boys were setting a target to reach ten goals.
As the second half got under way, the blazing sun was still bearing down on the players and they were thankful for every bit of shade they were able to get into. Not long after the restart, James played a great ball for Edwin to run onto, allowing him to score making it 6-0.
Just then Benan came off for Ediz to make his first appearance of the day. Not long after coming on,Ediz gained the ball on the edge of the penalty area and curled it beautifully into the top left hand corner, leaving the keeper with no chance of keeping it out. Soon after, Ayo sprinted down the line and whipped in a cross from the left side of the pitch. Fortismere managed to clear it out but only as far as Rico who hit it on the volley from the right side on the edge of the box and it looped into the top left corner of the goal.
The ninth goal started from Richard, at left back, who played it to Ayo,who played it back to Richard, who was now in the box. Richard played the ball to Mitchell who slotted the ball into the goal leaving just one more goal to reach 10.
The tenth goal nearly came to Edwin as he was running towards the goal and looked to get his hatrick but was denied by a good save from the keeper as Edwin was 1 on 1 with him. Despite Edwin’s miss, the tenth goal came 3 minutes before time as Rico charged down the line once more and swung in one of his phenomenal crosses which, this time, found the foot of Sonny in the middle of the goal and he finished it expertly. Grammar ended the game winning 10-0.
Credit must be given to Fortismere who, despite losing by so many goals, didn’t let their heads drop and persisted to try and get a goal.
Grammar smashed this game and the future looks bright.Let’s hope that they can win their cup match on Wednesday 5th October against Vyners.
