OCTANE NUMBER METER

FOR MOTOR GASOLINES

User Manual

Version 2.1 - 2016

2 0 1 6

USER INFORMATION

The meter is easy to use, and you will easily see it for yourself.

The unique feature of the meter is that you may check octane number in the moment of filling fuel at the gas station.

After filling 2 - 5 liters in the tank through the metering pipe of the meter, you may decide if you should fill more or not if, when buying AI-95, your meter shows that its octane number is, for example, 88,0. Most probably, this gas station is selling fuel with octane number artificially increased with octane-increasing additives. Practice shows that acceptable deviation of octane number is within ±1.5 units of the number claimed by the gas station.

In case you always buy gasoline at the same gas station, periodically checking your fuel helps you be sure that its quality remains the same, or reveal a sudden change of gas characteristics.

NOTICE: Always install batteries with ВКЛ/ВЫКЛ. (ON/OFF) button 5 in ВЫКЛ. ( OFF) position.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

To set the meter in expanded mode, after pressing button ‘5’ and the appearance of a ticker bar in the middle of the display, using a thin object, press button 8 “CORR”.

Ticker tape messages will appear in the lower display. Further, with a 2-3 sec interval

the following data will be displayed:

• measured value in nominal units;

• measured value in nominal units with correction for gas temperature;

• gasoline temperature;

• gasoline research (octane) number (RON) with correction for gas temperature.

If in course of meter operation after the ticker bar a fixed 3-element bar will appear in the middle of the display, it means that electrical conductivity of the gasoline is above the limit due to the presence of impurities (e.g. water). We do not recommend filling such gas in the tank, especially, in winter.

In Section 11 you can see a figure placed in brackets. It characterizes the condition of dry sensor in the air and is entered in meter memory prior to its calibration. This figure is specific for each meter. If you want to check it, please switch on a dry meter in the air and set it into expanded mode. The meter will check sender condition. Measured value in nominal units with correction for gas temperature shall correspond to the figure in brackets. If the two figures are not the alike, wash the sensor and /or use measurement program correction mode.

NOTE: To remove from sensor deposits formed due to gasoline evaporation, it is recommended to clean the sensor (see p.8) at least once in two months or more often, depending on the frequency of meter use.

8. TROUBLESHOOTING.

If, after the meter is switched on, ticker bar instead of '00' displays a stationary three-element message, it means that meter sensor in tube 3 is not fit for work (metal chips, dust, drops of water, or other foreign matter). In this case, wash the sensor in metering tube 3 in gasoline, shake off the remaining drops, purge with air, and dry. For the complete removal of contamination after washing, you may use paper strips. Sensor may be washed in rectified rubber solvent gasoline (NEFRAS-S2-20\120 TU38.401-67-108-92) KALOSHA by repeated dipping of the tube in a vessel containing gasoline; gasoline level in the vessel should be above mark 7. After '00' appears in the display, the meter is ready for work.

9. STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION

The meter shall be stored and transported in factory case with closed cover.

No dust, acid and alkali vapors, aggressive gases or other corrosive impurities should be present in meter storage places.

The meter may be transported by any mode of transport.

When the meter is not used for a long time (over 2 months), please

remove batteries.

Do not leave the meter in direct sunlight for more than 1 hour.

10. WARRANTY LIABILITY AND

WARRANTY MAINTENANCE RULES

Manufacturer guarantees replacement of a meter which gets out of order within 24 months after the meter was sold, provided the meter was operated in compliance with this User manual. When buying the meter, ask the salesperson to fill Section 11 (Sale Registration). If this section is not filled or filled incorrectly, no claim for meter quality is accepted and no warranty

6. PREPARING FOR OPERATION

• Push button 5 ON/OFF in OFF position.

• Remove cover 6.

• Observing the polarity, install two batteries (type АА).

• Set the cover in place and fasten it with screws.

• Press button 5 at compartment 1 until it locks.

A ticker bar will appear in the middle of the digital display 4, and in a few moments figures ‘00’ will be displayed. The meter is ready for work.

“РАЗ” (RAZ) message on the digital display indicates that batteries are discharged. They should be replaced.

7. METER OPERATION.

The meter may work in two main modes:

• continuous-flow mode with gasoline flowing along metering tube 3;

• sensor immersion mode with metering tube immersion in vessel with

gasoline.

For operation in continuous-flow mode, install the gas station fuel gun as far as it would go into transition compartment 2 through rubber seals. Install metering pipe 3 in fuel tank filler, press button 5 at compartment 1, achieve even flow of gas through tube 3 by fuel flow regulator on the fuel gun without actuating fuel gun shutoff valve. In a few moments ticker bar in the middle of display 4 will be replaced by figures indicating octane number of gasoline flowing through the meter. Ignore the first reading and wait for the next 2-3. Then stop filling, switch off the meter, remove it from fuel gun and shake off the remaining fuel from the tube.

This mode allows the possibility of monitoring gasoline quality in course of filling. If there are air bubbles in flowing gas, meter readings will be too low.

For operation in sensor immersion mode, place metering pipe 3

vertically or aslant in a vessel filled with gasoline above the mark 7.

7

Press button 5 at compartment 1. Make sure there is a ticker bar in the middle of the display and take the readings. Ignore the first reading and wait for the next 2-3. Then switch off the meter, remove it from gasoline and shake off the remaining fuel from the meter.

In course of measurements, two-or three-digit octane number values are displayed with increment of one. To obtain more accurate information on measurement, you can press button 8 KOPP (CORR) (see p.10), and values with increment of 0.1 will be displayed.

Measurement cycles are repeated 10 times; then, the display dims, and an intermittent sound signal is heard, reminding you that you should switch the meter off.

Often gasoline contains dissolved foreign matter (in particular, (motor oil, fuel oil, diesel oil and other poorly evaporating substances), remaining after gasoline is evaporated, and accumulating at sensor plates. Such contamination affects initial properties of the sensor and results in too high meter readings.

To eliminate this problem, the meter has measurement program correction mode, taking into account sensor contamination. To make a correction, press button 8 “CORR”, using a thin object; press button 5 to switch the meter on, and release button 8. After a double sound signal, lower part of the display will show:

• two ticker bars,

• absolute value of sensor resistance deviation from factory setting in standard units,

• ЗАП (ZAP) message

Deviation will be stored in meter memory and will be factored in while displaying octane number value.

Deviation value “000” means that the sensor is clean.

Each subsequent correction eliminates the previous one. Only the last correction matters in measurement.
