SPECIALTY REGISTRAR IN ORAL SURGERY

This is a 3 years full-time (or equivalent) fixed term post based in the Maxillofacial Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

General

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is a provider of Acute Health Services under contract to a range of commissioners in the area of the Hampshire basin and Western South Downs. The catchment is in excess of 550,000 people. The area served by the Trust is on the Solent and English Channel and includes the City of Portsmouth and the Boroughs of Gosport, Fareham and Havant extending from Warsash in the west to Emsworth on the Sussex border and its northern boundaries encompass Petersfield and Liss. With the exception of the rural north, it is an essentially urban area having grown up around the Royal Naval establishments in Portsmouth and Gosport. It now provides a wide range of modern high-tech industry and the facilities associated with a commercial port and cross Channel ferry terminal.

The Maxillofacial Unit

The specialities of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry are managed as a single unit.

Accountability

This post is managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of the Maxillo-Facial Unit and an Educational Supervisor will be assigned to support the trainee through the training programme

Intentions of the training programme

The programme aims to educate experienced dental graduates, enabling them to become competent, professional Oral Surgeons, able to describe, plan and provide high quality Oral Surgery care for patients within all appropriate environments and funding structures. The training will promote self reflection and self directed learning and successful completion of the programme will lead to eligibility to join the GDC Specialist List in Oral Surgery.

Structure of the Programme

Oral Surgery training will be delivered over the equivalent of a three-year full time programme.

Experience will be gained in several environments with supervised clinical practice in two district general hospitals: Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth and St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight. Clinical and training activities will also be undertaken at The Poswillo Unit, an out-patient facility providing treatment under general anaesthesia and sedation, and at Sharland House Dental Access Centre,a primary care practice operating under a PDS scheme. Additional training as found to be necessary will be accessed in other suitable clinical and academic environments, to meet the needs of the Oral Surgery curriculum.

Training will be provided by specialist oral surgeons, consultants in oral & maxillofacial surgery and consultants in related specialities in both Queen Alexandra and St Mary’s Hospital and elsewhere.

Training will cover the core clinical competencies of the oral surgery curriculum and the basic competencies in the management of health care delivery.

To ensure the core clinical competencies are covered, the trainee will experience in-patient management and exposure to emergency work.

Provision of training will be flexible to give the breadth and depth of experience and expertise required to enable the successful trainee to achieve clinical and professional competence to deliver high quality care.

To satisfactorily complete this period of training, the trainee is expected to have knowledge and understanding of all components of the curriculum, and competence in the majority.

Assessment of outcomes

Formative assessment will be carried out throughout the programme leading to a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training in Oral Surgery.

Summative assessment will be carried out through Membership in Oral Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons

Additional Qualifications

It is expected that the trainee will undertake an MSc in Health Care Management (University of Surrey) based in Guildford. This is a part-time programme and it is expected that as a minimum, the taught elements will be completed within the three-year training period. The educational fees for this aspect of the training programme are not funded, but time will be made available in the programme.

Timetable and caseload

The full time specialty registrar will spend at least 6 sessions per week involved in patient contact with at least at least three of these sessions devoted to supervised clinical practice. The work load will be sufficient to ensure a full range of cases is experienced. This will be assessed at regular meetings with the educational supervisor.

  • Approximately 60% of time devoted to direct clinical care
  • Approximately 20% of time will be spent on other training activities including indirect patient contact
  • 20% of the time will be spent on study, audit and research

Successful applicants will participate in a structured educational programme designed to impart knowledge and skills, together with monthly departmental governance meetings, and audit and journal clubs. They will also participate in, and where appropriate lead, SHO/DF2/DCP teaching.

Successful applicants will be timetabled to attend relevant multidisciplinary clinics, this will include the joint Oral Surgery/Orthodontic/Restorative clinic, the Restorative/Orthodontic clinic and as appropriate the joint Orthognathic clinic and the Oncology MDT meeting and clinic.

Membership of Professional Defence Organization

The holder of this post will be covered by the employing Authority in relation to claims for negligence but it is advisable for individuals to maintain membership of a Defence Organization so that independent advice is available to them on all matters relating to their professional activity
