Maine-Endwell Middle School

6th Grade English/Language Arts

2015-2016

Mrs. Erin Weaver

Following the National Common Core Learning Standards, students in 6th grade will continue to engage with challenging texts and strengthen critical thinking skills. These standards build upon their knowledge of reading strategies, literary devices and analysis.

We have an exciting literature-based 6th grade curriculum for our students. Students will be reading several novels in class, in addition to non-fiction/informational texts. We will focus on reading closely and developing reading strategies to increase comprehension. We will also focus on many writing strategies including writing summaries of texts, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect relationships, writing claims or arguments, and citing evidence from texts.

Supplies needed: 2- pocket folders, pencils, index cards, highlighter, Agenda mate

Grading Policy: My gradebook will reflect the district grading policy in which quarterly grades are weighted 80% achievement and 20% process.

Achievement grades may include: tests, essays, quizzes and in-class projects.

Process grades may include: homework, group work, class participation, etc.

~Students are given multiple opportunities to complete all major assignments. Students will be provided with the opportunity to take a re-test of qualifying assessments. These re-tests and any additional instruction are usually provided during activity 10th period.

~Students are expected (and reminded) to write their assignments in their Agenda-mate on a daily basis. This tool provides an excellent way for students to stay organized, especially with homework and upcoming assignments.

~Attendance definitely impacts student performance. Students are required to make-up work for illness, family trips and/or if they miss class for a band lesson or any other reason. Students are responsible to see their teacher for the work they missed and make it up in a timely manner.

~It is an expectation at MEMS that all students are to be respectful, responsible, and prepared for class each day. Students are expected to follow the disciplinary plan in place for all 6th graders.
