Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-timefixed-termcontract positionas a Research Assistantin the Molecular Glycobiotechnology Group (Biochemistry), at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This position is funded by an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership award, between NUI Galway and the company partner AER Sustainable Energy Ltd and is available from July/August 2013. This research programme is focused on developing unique and new scientific and technical outputs to support AER SEL’s objectives towards the industrial production of novel algal biomass converting enzymes.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will conduct collaborative research onthe applicationof enzymes/enzyme cocktails from AER SEL’s production organism for algal biomass converting enzymes. The research assistant will work closely with three other project team staff and the industry partner AER SEL in a challenging and dynamic team environment.The potential exists to develop novel and highly innovative biotechnology in a priority research area of national and international importance and to develop valuable skills of relevance to Industry, in leading-edge technology development and commercialization.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a track record in a research and development environment and strong experience in working with industry is essential. Applicants will ideally have an MSc(or equivalent experience) inBiochemistry, Applied Science, Biotechnology, Microbiology or a related biological sciences discipline. The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years’ experience in the analysis and application of fungal algal biomass-converting enzymes. Experience in the cultivation offilamentous fungi is essential.The applicant will have strong analytical and technical skills, especially in post-fermentation analytics, enzyme assay development and application, especially in the context of ISO 9001. A minimum of 1-2 years recent experience in an academic and/or industrial R&D environment is desirable. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new products of relevance to industry, and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills. Experience of working in a team environment, report writing and meeting key targets and goals within an industrially-focused project is essential.

Salary: €21,850 – 26,090 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
