A MESSAGE TO PARENTS
It is my pleasure to welcome you to NitroElementary School. The faculty and staff join me in saying we're happy to be a part of the Nitro Community. We hope this will be a successful and satisfying year for you.
The pages of this handbook are filled with important information regarding school policy and procedures. Parents and students should review the contents together. If you have any questions, please call the school office at 755-2451. We feel that open and clear communication between school and home is important to the success of our educational program.
Students at all grade levels should bring home daily a communicator folder that we ask that you look through each evening. This folder will improve your child's organizational skills and serve as a helpful reference for parents who seek to provide academic support at home. Nitro Elementary School parents are our partners in the important job of educating the children of this community. We value your support and we encourage you to visit the school often. Please log on to Kanawha County Schools and view our webpage, which is up-dated each week.
Starting this year Kanawha County Schools will be using a new technology program called “Engrade” to track student attendance, grades and records. Parents will use Engrade instead of the Edline services to monitor their child’s classroom grades. This is a more efficient tool to help our school to maintain accuracy of all student records.
We welcome your participation and support this school year and solicit your membership in the PTO and our Local School Improvement Council. We are very pleased to once again have Title I back in our school. Thanks to Title I we will have Extended Day Tutoring and many after school activities to better involve students and parents in the great work going on at Nitro Elementary School. Working together, we will be able to reach our collective and individual goals and celebrate the achievements of our students.
Sincerely,

ATTENDANCE AREA
Parents/guardians of students, who live in another attendance area or county and wish to attend NitroElementary School, must contact the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, Jane Robert's office at 348-1345 to seek official permission. Permission will be granted if the class enrollment is not too large, the parent provides transportation, and the student's attendance and behavior is acceptable.
If you move out of the county during the school year, your child may continue to attend Nitro Elementary until the end of the current school year. At that time, it willbecome necessary for you to apply for permission to attend the following year. If a student attends Nitro Elementary and moves to another attendance area within the county, he or she has the option to automatically continue attendance at our school providing that transportation, attendance and behavior are acceptable.

Walking and car riding students eating breakfast should be here between 7:10 and 7:30 A.M. and have their breakfast in the cafeteria.
Schedule a Teacher Conference:
If you would like to schedule a conference with a teacher, please call for an appointment, (304) 755-2451.

2:15 Dismissal of school buses, “Third Base” and “King’s Way” after school
programs.
2:20-2:30 Dismissal of all Walkers and Car Riders
It is extremely important for students to be in class on time. Children who arrive late miss valuable instruction which cannot be recovered and also creates an interruption to the rest of the class when they arrive. Please encourage your children to be prompt. If your child arrives late they must be signed in at the counselor's office (if before 8:15 a.m.) or the main office (after 8:15 a.m.). Students arriving after the tardy bell must receive a class permit before entering their classroom.
As a reminder --- 19th Street is one way from 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. to allow parents a safe drop off point for students arriving in automobiles. Please be patient and pull up to the sidewalk to drop off students. 19th Street is also one way from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. for student pick-up. We ask that you stay in your vehicle and pick up your children as they exit the school from the front door on 19th Street only. All other exits A, B, and C please come to the designated exit door to pick up your children at the Exit Door. If you enter the building for the purpose to pick up your children we ask that you report to the school office and sign them out as you would any time instruction is in progress. Standing space is limited so please stand in the entry foyer or near the office so your child will easily locate you. Please do not pick up children from the classroom. This is for the safety of your child and other children.
Head Start-Pre-K children should be signed out at their classroom. You may park in the Second Avenue parking lot while signing out Head Start-Pre-K children.
Also, we ask that you use designated crosswalks to cross streets in the morning and evening. Please do not cross your child between school busses. This is also for the safety of our children.
Font Door Security System ______
The front door entry will scan your driver’s license and print a visitor pass in the office before the office staff can “buzz” you into the school. It is important you always have your driver’s license with you when you visit the school during instruction time. Again, this is a county implementation intended for the safety of all children.
SCHOOL MEALS
Breakfast and lunch are available for students and adults. Breakfast is served between 7:10 and 8:00 a.m. School meals are charged through a billing process. A statement of charges will be sent home each month by the Child Nutrition Office of Kanawha County Schools. Free and reduced meal status may be granted to students based on the monthly income of their family. These forms are sent home at the beginning of the school year. If at any time during the school year your income level changes and you would like a form, you may call the school at 755-2451 and we will gladly supply the form. A menu is sent home each month so that you and your child can choose which days he/she will eat. If there is a need to change the menu, every effort will be made to announce the change the evening before. As last year, all students eat free this year.
Meal prices: All students eat free this school year.
Adult Breakfast: $3.25 Extra Milk (cash only) .45
Adult Lunch: $4.25
Students will be permitted to charge only one breakfast and one lunch per day. Glass containers are not permitted in the lunch room. Students are not permitted to bring soft drinks or caffeinated drinks to school. Extra milk or milk for cold lunch students is sold on a cash only basis.
ANIMALS AT SCHOOL
Please be aware that insurance regulations for the school system prohibit animals of any kind from being on school property (inside or outside) unless they are a service animal. Anyone not following this regulation will be asked to leave the premises.
ATTENDANCE
To achieve academic success, regular school attendance is necessary. KanawhaCounty has adopted an attendance policy that requires all students to attend school faithfully, without unexcused absences. Illness of a student may be verified by parents/guardians no more than 3 consecutive or total days per school year. If a student is absent more than 3 consecutive or more than 5 total days in a school year, a doctor's excuse is required. Please contact the school by phone if your child is absent and follow up with a written note or doctor's excuse when they return. A copy of the Kanawha County School's attendance policy is located in the 2014-2015 KCS school handbook.
If a student is absent because of an emergency or illness, please call the school office before 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence. Any student arriving after 9:20 a.m. or leaving before 12:45 p.m. will be considered absent one-half day. Please remember students are allowed only five Parent Excuses per school year.
Leave of educational value excuses will not be granted for routine family vacations scheduled during the school year.
To Succeed In School It Is Important To:
Arrive at school on time (tardy bell rings, 7:45 a.m.)
Attend school every day
Attend school all day (dismissal, 2:15 p.m.)
And Graduate!
BIRTHDAY INVITATIONS
If birthday party invitations are to be distributed at school, an invitation MUST be given to every child in the classroom. We need to be considerate of the feelings of those that might be left out. Please do not distribute party invitations to students in the hallway before or after school. Arrangements for distribution of birthday party invitations must be made with the classroom teacher.
Students are honored each month at lunch for birthdays. The celebration will take place the last instruction day of the month. July and August birthdays are honored on August 31. June and July birthdays will be honored on the last regular instruction day in May, or if we have make-up days, in June 2015.
