This is an edited version of the updates, summarized by Dawn Schnake, Trailhead District Cub Scout Resource Forum Commissioner. For the full updates, please go to:
June 1, 2015 – New Cub Scout Program will be in effect. Scout handbooks should be available for purchase.
May 1, 2015 – Den Leader Guides will be available.
Noteworthy:
●Tiger Cubs will become Tigers.
●Current immediate recognition devices such as the Webelos compass points, arrow points, progress toward ranks emblem and beads, and the Tiger immediate recognition device will be discontinued.
●Bobcats will learn Scout Oath, Scout Law, Cub Scout Sign, Cub Scout handshake, Cub Scout motto, Cub Scout Salute, and complete the Protection from Child Abuse pamphlet.
●The device is an adventure loop for Tiger, Wolf, and Bear and adventure pins for Webelos and Arrow of Light.
●Four Meetings are suggested per Month: one pack meeting, two den meetings, and one outing.
Adventures: Seven adventures are required to advance to Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light.
RequiredAdventures / Elective
Adventures / Recognition Device
Tiger / 6 / 1 / Belt Loops
Wolf / 6 / 1 / Belt Loops
Bear / 6 / 1 / Belt Loops
Webelos / 5 / 2 / Pins
Arrow of Light / 4 / 3 / Pins
Adventures are based around a theme rather than a single subject. For example, to complete the Webelos Walkabout adventure, boys plan and carry out a hike. On the hike, they take on a leadership role for the hike, promote personal fitness, and carry out a community service project while on the trail.
The desired outcomes are
●Character development
●Participatory citizenship / Aims of Scouting
●Personal fitness
●Outdoor skills and awareness / Additional key program outcomes
●Leadership
Den Leader Guides:
●Rationale – the purpose of the adventure and how it fits into the Cub Scout program
●Takeaways – what Cub Scouts will gain from completing the adventure
●Rank requirements – what Cub Scouts need to complete in order to earn the adventure
●Notes to Den Leaders – hints for planning and leading the meeting
●Preparation and materials – complete list of materials needed to implement the meeting
●Den meeting plans – complete, step-by-step den meeting guidelines. The den meetings are made up of the same seven steps as before:
●Do-at-home reminders – printable reminders to help parents and boys complete requirements at home
●A full appendix of information such as games, planning trips, additional program resources, etc.
These materials have been updated:
●Den Leader Guidebooks – for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos/Arrow of Light leaders
●Cub Scout Leader Handbook
●How to Book of Cub Scouting
