Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Congregation of the First United Methodist Church is to continue to be a committed fellowship of disciples sharing the love of God through Jesus Christ and furnishing a place of Christian worship, programs, services and facilities for its members and the people of the Johnson City area.

Teddy Bear Ministry

You are invited to hold a bear during joys and concerns and then take it and give it to someone who needs a word of encouragement, healing, or up-lifting. We ask that you do not take one for yourself. We also welcome bears that you would like to donate. They don’t have to be new. We are able to clean most “old” bears.

Call to Worship BOW #315

Leader: O God, you made of one blood all nations that dwell on the face of

the whole earth,

All: and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to them that are afar off and to them that are near.

Leader: Grant that all people everywhere may seek after you and find you.

All: Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten your kingdom; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Confession BOW #488

We confess that the circle of love is repeatedly broken because of our sin of exclusion. We create separate circles: the inner circle and the outer circle, the circle of power and the circle of despair, the circle of privilege and the circle of deprivation.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive all who have sinned against us.

We confess that the circle of love is broken whenever there is alienation, whenever there is misunderstanding, whenever there is insensitivity or a hardening of the heart.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive all who have sinned against us.

We confess that the circle of love is broken whenever we cannot see eye to eye, whenever we cannot link hand to hand, whenever we cannot live heart to heart and affirm our differences.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive all who have sinned against us.

Through God's grace we are forgiven, by the mercy of our Creator, through the love of the Christ, and in the power of the Spirit. Let us rejoice and be glad!

Glory to God! Amen.

(MIRIAM THERESE WINTER, U.S.A., 20TH CENT., ALT.)

(A Time of Quiet Reflection)

Words of Assurance

The Lord God is merciful and gracious, endlessly patient, loving, and true, showing mercy to thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, and granting pardon. Amen.

Today’s Scripture

Common English Bible

Luke 4:14-21

14Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the whole countryside. 15He taught in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

16Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been raised. On the Sabbath he went to the synagogue as he normally did and stood up to read. 17The synagogue assistant gave him the scroll from the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me.
He has sent me to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the prisoners
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to liberate the oppressed,
19and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

20He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the synagogue assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him. 21He began to explain to them, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled just as you heard it.”
