Free Rio Rancho Classes Address Radon Gas in Homes,

Construction and Real Estate

Santa Fe, NM, March 17, 2009—Santa Fe Community College will offer three freeclasses in April designed to educate builders, real estate professionals, and homeowners about radon, an odorless, tasteless and invisible gas. All classes will be offered on Tuesday, April 14 in the CabezonCommunity Center, at 2305 Cabezon Blvd, Rio Rancho.Students can register by calling (505) 428-1270 or online at

“Radon in Real Estate,” scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, will teach real estate professionals how to address the issue of radon in homes without incurring unnecessary liabilities. Radon’s classification as a cancer-causing agent has increased the demand for indoor radon tests duringreal estate transactions. New Mexico Real Estate Commission and National Environmental Health Association have approved this class for four hours of education credit. The SFCC course number is RA340-71, CRN31540.

“Radon-Resistant New Construction” is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. Participants will learn simple and cost-effective construction techniques to reduce the levels of radon gas in New Mexico homes. Radon-resistant construction is a requirement for homes earning the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)designation in Radon Zone 1 areas (which include most counties in Northern New Mexico).In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Indoor airPLUS program requires radon-resistant construction for all new homes. “Home Owner’s Guide to Radon” is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. New Mexico Indoor Radon Outreach Coordinator Michael Taylor will teach participants how to test for radon in their homes and what to do if they discover a radon problem. The SFCC course number is RA320 71, CRN31532.
