Section I Reading Test [45 points]

Part 1.Questions 1 – 5 are based on the following passage. (20 points)

Choose a word from the box below to fill in each blank in the passage. Use capitals where necessary. There are more words than you need. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.

although / as long as / his / but also
however / moreover / when / in addition to

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born at Springwood on a cold January day in 1882 to Sara and James Roosevelt. Both he and his mother nearly died during his birth, although both recovered with good health. Mrs. Roosevelt was unable to have more children, and she always considered her son to be a precious gift. He was carefully protected by both his parents, given every advantage, and made to feel that all those living and working on the Springwood estate were there to serve his every want and need.

______(1) his parents indulged young Franklin, they did not want to spoil him. His mother taught him about manners, courtesy, and the proper way of behaving. ______(2) father, James, taught him the ways of a country gentleman, introducing him to political life and public affairs. James Roosevelt was a kind, concerned gentleman who participated in many activities, both in Dutchess County and through business dealings in New York City. He was known locally as "Mr. James," a title of respect given to him by villagers for his involvement in Hyde Park's government and contribution to local affairs.

Following James Roosevelt's death in 1900, his wife Sara inherited Springwood. Inspired by stories of family history from his parents and relatives, Franklin Roosevelt became an amateur architect in his own right. ______(3), Mrs. Roosevelt's usual reply to Franklin's suggestions for changes or improvements on the place was, "I think not, Franklin. If it was good enough for your father, it is good enough for me." The major changes reflect Franklin's persistence as well as his abiding interest in architecture and the Springwood estate. In 1915, Franklin and his mother worked with an architectural firm from New York City to renovate and enlarge the house and to give it a new look. Springwood changed dramatically, transformed from a simple farmhouse with wooden clapboards in the popular mid-19th century Italian style to a grand stucco-and-fieldstone, early American style mansion.

The experiences of his early life at home as a protected, educated, and advantaged young man, ______(4) his experiences in field, farm, and village shaped Franklin Roosevelt's experiences in public service later in his life. As Olin Dows, a family friend and neighbor explained: “From his relations with his neighbors he knew that a national, even a world problem, always came down to a personal problem. He tells us that ______(5) writing his fireside chat on the banking crisis he was trying to make these problems clear to his old friends and neighbors, to individuals in Dutchess County.”

_____ 6. Who is our best teacher in an age of information technology? Dr. Chen Jianxiang of Beijing Normal University addressed an on-site audience of college students and teachers as well as off-site TV viewers last Thursday afternoon in a CCTV-10 feature programme of “Specialists’ Forum”, advocating a renewed understanding of the role of the teacher in education and an increasing social demand for autonomous learners who is capable of constantly renewing his knowledge and skills in the rapidly changing world.

_____ 7. Should school limit homework? Some people say schools should give the pupils 30 minutes of homework a day so that they have more time to go to the park or meet their friends. There is every reason for one to enjoy going to a park or meeting friends, but would one also enjoy the benefits of success in tests, too? Some research done in the North American context in the 1990s compared homework habits of Chinese Americans and European American. The result seems to confirm the belief that homework does make a difference. The Chinese American children, who did more homework for longer hours than the European American children, scored higher in academic tests. So, if we want children to achieve more academically, we must let them do more homework. It would be naive to imagine children would progress academically when they have plenty of time to go to parks and play with their friends.

_____ 8. When you consider building a website, you first need to think if you have the right resources and people to create and maintain the site. The first step is sometimes called “outsourcing”, which simply means going out to collect data. Next, you analyze the data. These two are sometimes jointly called “field research”. When the field research is done, you’d work on the technical construction of a website with information technologists and design artists. You’d also need scriptwriters to compose the content, which is to fill the “columns” and “frames” of your web pages. A content manager can help coordinate the various contents to make sure that clarity, contents, timing, updates, ads, and the legal statements are all taken care of. This process may be complicated, but it does not necessarily mean that website building always require a team of people. You learn to use many tools to make your web-building easier. It’s not uncommon for a site to be built by one person single-handedly.

_____ 9.Team building has been described by Mike Woodcock and Dave Francis as “the process of planned and deliberate encouragement of effective working practices while diminishing difficulties of blockages which interfere with the team’s competence and resourcefulness.” In other words, team building is the process of getting a group of diverse individuals to work together effectively as a team. When a new project is started, there is a great need to get everyone on the project team going in the same direction and aimed at accomplishing the same project goals.

_____ 10.The roads are clouded with dust, the same with the vehicles and the pedestrians. The sinuous lines of cars, van, buses, shuttles and trucks extended in between the high-risers, and the sites for the high-risers-to-be, directed chiefly by the fluttering flags and balloons outside the malls apart from the traffic lights. The city is chuckling along, with the blowing horns, the humming of the engines and rustling of the leaves in the wind. Such is my city, she thought as she watches the street behind her misty window shield, when the first drop of rain settled on its glass – a muddy, spotty window shield. More! -- She begins to hope, pray, more rain!
